View original topic: possible motor and tranny for my 63 beetle

Hey guys. I want to put a new motor and tranny in my 63 bug soon. I want something that has some nice performance to it and to be decently reliable. Here some specs on the engine that I am deciding on. 2332cc, 110 cam, 31mm lifters, 32mm oil pump, stainless steel vales with 35.5mm exhaust and 40mm intake. Weber 44 carbs, . I'm thinking of running a 1 5/8 header with a mondo muffler and possibly a porsche style fan(this might cause argument but I love the look of the fan and have seen many performance vws with these fans). All to run on 89 octane. This will not be my mane driver but my fun to drive every other day car depending on weather.. Let me see compression ratio should be around 8 6 01. I'm guessing I should have around 145hp with this set up. What do you guys think of the set up? Also was thinking of getting a rancho pro street tranny with a freeway flyer 4th gear, wanted a 5 speed, but I think they are way to expensive.
Can I get opinions.

I find too many things that I would change to mention.... do more searches. My personal opinion of your combo is that it will be a low performing pig. Please do not Take this personally. It is not meant as an attack.

Here is my combo that I am building.....

2110 82X90.5
DRD L-5 Heads 40X35
Engle FK-8 cam
9.4 Comp ratio
Cb Chro mo crank
CB h beam rods
1 1/2 to 1 5/8 merged exhaust with dual QP's
44 idfs or 48 Ida's ( I have both)
Nothing SCAT made on this motor
Balanced and Blueprinted
At least 155 HP Probably more

Porshe fan shrouds are pure dogshit, might as well get a Honda if you are going for "looks"

Freeway flyer....... don't get me started...

I really am a nice guy, but you really ought to do your self a favor and look around.... Some of your MM sizes are wrong for the parts....never seen a 32 mm oilpump and a guess of HP is meaningless so it makes me wonder if you really understand what you are getting yourself into.

I really wish you good luck.... others on the forum should be able to steer you the right way.

Hmm, I'll pick at this....

Decently reliable and 2332cc don't really fall into the same category IMO.

110 cam? Too small... I have a 120 in my 1915

32mm pump... should be 26mm.

Porsche style fan... as stated above - dogshit

8.6 compression... kind of a waste to make an engine that big and then give it such a low compression, wouldn't ya say?

I'd say forget about the 5 speed for now and just throw in the .082 4th. A 5 speed will cost you about as much as the engine when it's all said and done.

Try searching a little bit... this combo needs alot of work.

You can build a larger capacity engine with smaller heads and cam like you mentioned, it will have plenty of TQ at low rpm, but not as high a peek hp.

If you want docile with tons of pulling grunt then your not to far off.

That's kinda what I went with:

2275cc
82/94
H-beams
120 cam
26mm oil pump with seperate oil cooler and fan
42x37.5 S.S. valves, mini d-port heads, 55cc
009
55 amp
44 idf's
8.75
A-1 1 5/8 merged
4.12 r/p.........w/ 3.80, 2.06, 1.32 & .82 flyer

Dynoed by Jack: 158 hp at 5000..................fast, reliable, and, yes, a comprimise
