Google is your friend.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_injection_(engines)
For some reason, I can't get the whole URL to work right; something about the parenthesis. Copy+paste the whole thing into a new browser to view. |

It sprays water and/or methanol into the intake.

It cools off the intake charge and arguably causes a small increase in octane, helping to decrease the occurence of detonation.

It does not make more power by itself; however, it can facilitate the conditions that make more power. For example, lets say that with 91 octane, you get engine detonation at 15 psi of boost. With water/methanol injection, now you can run 20 psi of boost with no detonation. Running greater boost pressure is what is really making the power, but the water/methanol injection is what allowed you to run that much boost without detonation (and destroying your engine). |

| Not a whole bunch to be gained on an NA engine, but it will allow you run a little more timing, if the engine likes it,or a lower octane fuel in some circumstances. |
