Need to remove some pipe plugs to clean out the oil galleys. The shop that did machine work loctited them in. They are giving me a fit coming out. Should I give it a sharp whack with a punch and hammer, or heat it up with a hair drier???

If they used high-strength red Loctite, you'll need more heat than a hair dryer. Propane or mapp-gas torch should do it.

You don't need to heat the case anywhere near ignition temperature. you need about 250C or 480F, according to the Loctite PDF. This is localized heat on the plug, not the entire case.

Quote: For Disassembly
1. Apply localized heat to nut or bolt to approximately 250°C. Disassemble while hot.

Red loctite is overkill on tapered gallery plugs. These are very unlikely to unscrew even dry.

Not if you're quick with the heat. A temperature crayon would be nice.

I use blue loctite...just strong enough to prevent loosening or leaks...and easier to remove for cleaning
