I would contact john at aircooled.net.

But since he recommends the grey/ grey spring for most vw applications i would expect what ever comes stock isnt the best curve.

Is mallory unilite centrifical 4554101 the only one for VW AC engines?
Or Mallory makes more than one version of unilite distrubutor?

Mallory also makes the Unilite 4754101H centrifugal/vacuum advance distributor.

As far as I know all of the distributors that Mallory makes for VWs ship with a Purple advance spring and a Brown advance spring. At least every Mallory that I have ever purchased came with purple and brown springs

The Grey/Grey advance springs are what most people seem to be using. however, every engine is different, and unless you have a dyno test on your engine and determine what the optimum spark timing for your engine is, you are just guessing. You can also do road testing to check your ignition timing.

Mallory also ships the 2354109H with a 22 degree maximum advance at 2,500 RPM and the 2354101H, 4554101H and 4754101H with a 24 degrees maximum advance at 3,000 RPM, or so says the Mallory instructions sheets. But you can easily adjust the maximum advance from 0 to 28 degrees maximum advance.

How? Just changing the springs?
I have a 1915 with dual 44IDF and 009 and I want to change for mallory unilite, so I understand I should go for a centrifical 4554101, right?
I know there are other options ( for instance Jacobs ) but I like the Mallory and I want stock looking coil, no box
sorry for stealing the thread

To change the rate of advance, you use different combinations of springs.

To change the maximum amount of advance, you loosen two screws and rotate the advance limit plate.

Download this instruction sheet.

If your 44 IDFs have vacuum ports on them, buy a Mallory Unilite 4754101 Centrifugal/Vacuum advance distributor. I know that many 40 IDFs came with vacuum ports. I'm not sure, but I thought some 44 IDFs also came with vacuum ports. Harney or Air Cooled John would know for sure.

Jacobs also made the traditional round chrome plated ignition coils with air gapped cores. They aren't as good as their larger coils, but they are a big improvement over a Bosch ignition coil. You can run a Jacobs ignition coil with a Unilite distributor, but you can also hide the Jacobs ignition computer. Some people mount the Jacobs ignition computer under the rear seat.
