Alright guys, I searched this site for it but couldn't find too much info on this subject only the opposite of what I need. Everyone knows how to mate a 12 volt motor to a 6 volt tranny. I just bought a buggy with a 12 volt tranny and I have a 1200cc (6 volt) motor that I want to put in it for now. Can I just use a normal 12 volt starter onto my 6 volt flywheel? I know the 6 volt flywheel isn't going to rub anything cause it's smaller than a 12 volt flywheel, but will the 12 volt starter engage the 6 volt flywheel? Can I just use a starter from a 71-74 automatic bug? I appreciate your time guys.

The gear on the starter is different for the 6v and 12V flywheels.

The most common adaption is to buy an adapter sleeve that presses over the 6V shaft. You remove the 12V starter bushing from the transaxle, and the shaft of the 6V starter with the sleeve runs directly inside the hole for the starter bushing inside the transaxle.

I'm not sure if they are still available, but I do believe that at one time an adapter Bendix was available for the conversion.

There are 12V starters with a self supporting bushing, but I don't know if they ever made 6 volt starter like this.

More simply, remove 12 volt starter bushing in bell housing and replace with 6 volt bushing...

There is no self supported starter (SR17) for 6 Volts systems as SR17 starter was a Auto Stick feature only ...

You need to use a 6 volt starter with a 6 volt flyweel. You should be able to buy a converter bushing to run a 6 volt starter in a 12 volt tranny. I have bought them in the past from my local VW parts store. It was cheap. The nose on the end of the 6 volt starter is bigger then the nose on the 12 volt starter. (It is a lot less hasel to remove the old bushing before the motor is installed). If you are going to run the 6 volt starter on 12 volts you may consider changing the 6 volt starter solenoid to a 12 volt one so the starter dosn't eventualy chew the theeth off the flywheel. The starter solenoid comes attached to the side of the starter, and buying one seperatly is all most as much as a new starter. I eventually ground the teeth on my flywheel up so bad in the 2 places the pistons are all half way up or down that I would have to push the car a little in gear to get the starter to line up with a good spot on the flywheel. I have since converted everything to 12 volts.
