Was working on the '50 interior a bit last night, and took apart one of the round pillows. I have been taking the interior all apart carefully, not hack and slash (in case someone wants to buy that "70's college porch couch" interior whole...;-)), learning a lot along the way.
Last night I took apart one of the pillows, which looks to have been basically homemade. Had to stare at it for a bit to figure out the "trick" of how they are done. Pretty easy actually... I plan on posting an album of pics of the entire interior redo as I go along.
But question: what is the correct beading around the ends? It is just the same fabric that is used on the rest of the pillow over a bead welt? Currently there is a brown vinyl on the welt, but I don't think that is correct.
Anyone have a pic they can post of an original? It is the Himmelservice "Stifel braun (sp?)" fabric for 1950...
TIA. |

Well not sure I have ever "pillow talked" with guy before but there was that period from 1968 to '73 thats a lil fuzzy.... Anyway I will be watching this thread as my girlfriend likes the pillows in the back seat..wait that didn't sound right, thats gonna cost me some flowers....she likes the way they look. I do have some questions for the samba swanny's: Are the pillows a VW made factory option, if so how long were they offered, in other words "period correct".

| I don't know the actual "cut off " date, but I have been told that they are NOT period correct for any Zwitter or later. |

I was told the same thing, except verts. They changed to a square shape and were available as an option until 1st January 1961.

| My recollection also is that the round cushions were added sometime in 1950 for a short time that year only, as standard for deluxe sedans, matching the seat upholstery material. I've seen cushions with and without the same edge piping as the seats used but I would suspect the edge piping was the correct. |

| Square, to me, would be more logical since they are less likely to roll while careening through turns. |

I think I am going to try the trick someone here suggested that is to put a section of pipe with lead shot inside, capped at both ends, along the edge of the foam. This off center weight should keep them from rolling around most of the time.
Then again, the last thing a split needs is MORE weight....! |

| John, I have a pair of OG pillows. I'm happy to take pictures if that would be of assistance. |

I have heard this trick as well, but I'm sure just putting the pipe will be enough weight to keep it from rolling.

The cut off date for the rear seat pillows (arm rest cushions) was November 20, 1951, chassis 1-0304210 according to Price's "A Production History of the World's Most Famous Car". I believe this same date and chassis information is indicated by Garwood's book as well. Price doesn't say when they were introduced, but Bob Wilson's Authenticity Series says mid-1949. I can't remember where I gleaned this, but I understood they were standard on the Deluxe and Kabrio and could be purchased separately as an option. |

| Ok so when did they go from round to square pillows? Is there a difference in verts? |

i made mine into speaker tubes and just have a removable face when listening to them.
the tube is quite heavy so we made a flap of material sewn off the side of the pillow.the flap tucks down beside the seat where i velcro it to.
pain in the ass if you want to remove the seat, but overall the flap keeps them from rolling all over the place. |

Yeah I saw a pic of your setup. VERY cool. I spent years designing and installing car stereo systems and have a real appreciation for that.
In my old age, the only thing I like to listen to in my split is 25 roaring horses and some straight cut gears...... |
