had a good friend make a rack from an idea i had. made the whole thing from scratch. i felt i need to show off his craftsmanship. holds over 250 lbs, not that the roof would...
this shot was taken before the rack was 100%, but you get the idea.

I have to agree with orangeyesore, but that's just my opinion. I think the original roof racks have much better lines which are consitent with the roof line.

looks like you took a perfectly good metal rack and cut it up to put that iron cross in it?

I can respect the time & craftsmanship you put into it, however that is not 'from scratch'. 'From scratch' would have been MUCH better than cutting up that one to put an iron cross in it.

Im also sorry that your bug has that abortion on its roof, and that you drive it around.

that rack was completely tubing in a metal shop. so it indeed was from scratch. not a factory rack cut up. just for the record.

That "thing" would be better used as a BBQ grill for pig carcasses.

the rack matches the crapatina of the rest of the beetle perfectly.

I like the iron cross aspect of it but it doesn't seem to match with the look of the rest of the rack.
It looks like you hacked up a regular Bug rack instead of extending the design to a fully-formed custom one-off rack. |

The iron cross may be a bit played out, but I think you could pull it off if it looked completely custom with a smaller cross & also matched the style of the bug. Right now it looks like a patch job even if it isn't (which means you did a great job of copying an existing rack, not easy to do). If the cross will be out of square tube try to match more of the rack by using square tube for the stringers. I guess what I'm trying to say is it looks stock with a blocky piece of custom fab in the center - make it all look custom.
