heres the deal my 92passat gl has an auto in it that wasnt taken care of...

the fluid in it is VERY dark but doesnt really smell burnt.

ive never owned an auto vw and never a newer vw at that.....just wondering if it would be wise to change the fluid and run it for some time and then change the fluid again and the filter???

i know in american cars its not a good idea once the fluid reaches this mush break down to change.....

just wondering if the vw would hold up to it????

should i put any additives in it to help it any????

i have yet to be able to drive the car due to fixing some issues and waiting on an oil cooler hose to come in so i dont know how it drives on the hwy yet........

I had an automatic Jetta and when the fluid was getting dark like that it was because the seals between the transmission and differential part were starting to leak (but I didn't know that until after it blew). I got about 8000 kms on it before the seals failed completely. Apparently once the transmission is out it's pretty easy to replace the seals, but getting it out in mine was a nightmare compared to a standard.
They were known for that and that could be why the fluid is dark in yours. Aside from that the automatic wasn't too bad, just a lot harder on gas than it is now since I switched it over to a standard. I towed a trailer with mine often with no trouble at all.

how hard was it to convert to 5speed? ive been thinkin about doing this to this one once i get the wife something else to drive....

It was actually quite easy because the car was a 5 speed when I bought it and when I did the automatic conversion I kept all the 5 speed parts and didn't even take the clutch pedal out because I knew I would be switching it back over at some point.
