I see the term "weekender" from time to time. Is there such a thing and what makes it different from a "camper"

Thanks,

obieoberstar Mon Nov 03, 2008 5:56 pm

I think the weekender refers to a camper without the lifting roof.

I don't think "Weekender" was used by VW until the Vanagons. But here is an example of a tin-top Westy aka Weekender.

yep just confirming what they said a weekender is a bus with the camping interior , without the pop top.

i believe it was offered as it's own sort of deal if you want to get really tech. about it, but i'll leave that to the likes of naskeet

When I think of weekender, I think of a vanagon or eurovan with no camping interior, but a poptop.

theizzardking Mon Nov 03, 2008 7:31 pm

that's if your a fagagon guy :lol: :twisted: j/k

question seriously though what purpose would a pop top serve with no camping interior? the whole point of having your bus camp worthy is at least a bed and table of some sort?

A weekender bay has a poptop, no sink or refrig. & no closet next to lower bed.

USA bay Westies were never offered in a 'weekender' version. For the 76-78 models, 3 versions were offered: P-21, P-22, and P-27.

If you go here, http://www.type2.com/bartnik/csmanual.htm, and look at pages 4 and 5 it explains the differences. #1 is the P-21, #2 is the P-22, and #3 is the P-27.

If you go here, http://www.john-perry.com/vw/plaid.html, and scroll down to the bottom there are various notes that I am not sure are 100% accurate.
various notes
P21 = Hardtop camper package
P22 = Weekender or standard pop-top package
P27 = Deluxe pop-top package
In 78 and 79 the P21 option wasn't available.

Um, like if you are going to visit your girlfriend who lives 3 hours away with her parents and you want to be up there for the "weekend." :twisted:

theizzardking - A Vanagon with a poptop but without frig or stove is a Multivan. It has a queen size bed "upstairs" and a double bed "downstairs" plus a folding table and rear facing chairs. There is also a small cabinet on the drivers side rear so you can see out the passenger side windows.

Oh yeah, it also has heat that doesn't smell like exhaust!

The older bay hardtop Westys have the Z bed, cabinets, and sink/icebox combo. No stove. Nice setup, just no headroom. I camped one of these for 20 years. Sometimes called a Weekender, but usually called a hardtop camper.

You know, I can remember when people who drove Splits didn't think Bays were "real" buses

I've owned all three types of transporters (I don't consider the Eurovan a Bus, the front seats are behind the front wheels, it's a mini-van :x )

The Vanagons are just more comfortable, and slightly safer.

The Eurovan came in a config like the earlier Multivan, and was officially called a Weekender.

Volkswagens not the only VAN with a stove and crapper

Not that it matters, but mine had a P38 Westy code on the M-plate. I've met only one other person with the P38 and his was a '72 as well. Peace!

That's the code?? Hmmmm....:-k. I can safely say that yours is the first early Westy bus I've seen with a full width bed. I think it's really cool too!! That solves that dame blind spot problem :lol: !!!

I guess I have to change my signature now to say "Hard Top" instead of "Weekender"

Dames don't have a blind spot. Try peeking at another woman and your wife will immediately notice it.

Sunshine, that is a great configuration, I have the same layout in mine.
I had to use parts out of different busses to make it though. Is it the factory layout? I thought I "invented"it :lol:

I used a 75 full width bed and the jump seat from a 73. I have never seen the interior before I just like lots of seating.

jah_B Tue Nov 04, 2008 10:05 am

I had thought mine to be a weekender, but I guess not, having read this. It's a P30 campmobile. Sink/icebox on the passenger side, table, jumpseat on the driver's side, 3/4 bed, full height closet on the passenger side, Baltic Birch Handmade Westy Interior, and a tin top. I should have researched it before I started calling it a weekender I guess.. :oops:

Everything in mine is factory with the exception of the jump seat. Mine originally had a stool that strapped to a holder on the back of the drivers seat. It was missing when I got the bus, and I lucked up on the jump seat. I thought it was a nice configuration tho'. Congrats' on building your own. Peace!
