Hey guys, got a quick one for you. . . .

I recently acquired a 84 diesel rabbit with a 4 spd manual tranz. I also have access to an 84 Scorccio with a 5 spd manual tranz in it. Can I swap these out? I am a good mechanic, but don't know if I want to take on the task if I'm going to have to do crazy fabrication. I'm hoping something simple? Let me know what you guys think, thanks!

I had a customer on eBay ask me the same Q last week and since I never did one personally....I suggested look on www.VWVortex.com for tips on that one.

I think you will need the full 5 speed trans bushing kit with all the rods and I think some of the 5 speed trans body shift rod and brackets.

I'm also parting out a nice '85 cabby with aa 5 speed trans so if you need anything....

The 4spd to 5spd swap is pretty easy. After the obvious tranny swapping has occured the 2 plastic ended "dogbone" shift linkage pieces need to be replaced with the 5spd units and the "stop finger gap" needs to be adjusted from 20mm to 15mm.

The main shift rod is slightly shorter than the 5spd unit but the only effect that will have is to move the whole shift pattern forward less than a quarter of an inch. Not noticable if it isnt pointed out.

You also have to make sure the output flanges are the same size. they need to match the cv axles 90mm or 100mm.

about tranny swap, gas tranny has a different gear ratio. you will lose top speed. you need to research tranny number for gear ratio's

here is a ratio and tranny model codes link.
