You get them from a salvage yard.
You install them the same as a stock shroud.
You have to drill holes int he aftermarket 36hp shroud since they don't have holes in them.
The install procedure is outlined in the Robert Bentley shop manual... get one and read it. |

or you can just get an OEM doghouse shroud and have alot better cooling and install the flaps without drilling any holes.

| the thermostat mounts to a bracket under the 1/2 cylinders, just like in the picture, try to find a used one from a junkyard, swap meet, or on here. I only have 1 left and thats on my all stock 1600 dual port |

True but they help the engine warm up properly, also the flaps direct the air to the right place.... bottom line is the engine will last longer with them installed |

spoken like a true 17yo tinkerer
ur engine isnt gonna blow up or overheat without out but the factory wouldnt have put them there if they could have got away without it.
without it u will just get worse mileage and engine wont quite last as long as it was designed to
most vws getting around now dont have the the flaps let alone a working thermostat but even if the stat is dead the flaps still act as vanes and direct the air more to the heads not the just the cylinders as happens with no flaps in place |

| Can you run without a thermostat, but with the flaps installed and wired open? I heard of someone doing this once, but wasn't sure if it would be detrimental to the motor. Also, can you run without the top/bottom engine tins? Not the doghouse, but the tins that go on the top and bottom of the cylinders. This is in an offroad application, but I figured since we were on the topic. |

flaps installed and just wired open is better than no flaps cos they still act as vanes like theyre supposed to
but if u wanna run without the cylinder tins u can measure your engines lifespan in minutes
not gonna last real long when its not directing any air to the heads and all it and is only cooling the inner sections of the jugs
i knew a bike mechanic who figured his bikes dont need cooling shrouds why does the vw........
guess what happend to his engine |
