I have never own one of these before.... I don't have any interest in them I like 442's but the wife likes VW Things so I am going to buy her one.

I have found a 74 with no engine, has a roll bar setup and the roof is missing. I have not looked at the car yet, so I don't know much about body wise.

What engine will fit in this car?

Is a roof hard to find?

What things should I look for or at?

Any input would be great!

All type one engines will fit in your Thing. I can help you with a soft top. As far as what to look for. Check the floor pans (especially passenger rear behind the seat in the battery area for rust. Also check the rear quarter panels for rust. A Thing with no motor or top should be $1500 - $2000 depending on condition. Check inside the front hood for previous damage. The electrical system can be a pain. Hook up a battery and check windshield wipers, headlights, turn signals and such. The wiring on Things can tend to be a rats nest after 30+ years. Go to:
