View original topic: Overrider mounting plate

Hi
Anyone know the dimensions of the plate with the captive nut that fits inside the overrider to mount it to the bumper?
Mine are missing and I need to make some.
Are they attached (welded?) or just wedged inside by the bolt when fitted?

Cheers

Tim

just held in by bolt not attached, hence not usually on over riders when you buy them as they have usually fallen out in the past.

This one is stuck in ( and crooked) just from age and a good old brown sticky coating of ankor wax

If you make your own, originally they were (what is called) an interference fit, meaning yes they should wedge in behind those ears on the overrider. That makes them stick in place when you go to install the overrider and the attachment bolt, sticking them in place just makes installation so much easier, otherwise they just fall out.

But it can be more work to make them that way by hand, so if you are off a little, just use a little masking tape here and there to hold/support them in posiiton while you install, and then once you get the bolt started just tug the tape out of position. Make yourself a little 3-4" twisted tape leader so you don't have to fight your fingers up and into that area to pull the tape out.

The overriders are slightly tapered on the backside so your wedge nut plate should also slightly follow that taper some to fit properly and center in place so the overrider fits onto the bumper correctly with the bumper hole and wedge nut holes lining up. You'll see what I mean when you go fidgeting with making these. Measurements of an original won't help you much, unless you either have a nice flat NOS one, or account for the slight bow in the plate which results from it being installed when the bolt tightens down on it, the width will be less if its been installed before so account for that if you get a measurement. Best bbet is just go from Anna's picture, make a cardboard piece for a template if you want, then adjust.

The rear nuts on those plates are welded on flange nuts, originally spot welded in place, you can get flange nuts usually online, mcmaster.com definitely carries them, you might be able to score some from an auto body or resto shop though or a really well stocked auto parts shop, good luck.

Thanks guys,

I think I'll try to make some cardboard templates based on the photos.
