View original topic: Removing Barrel Nut From Shotgun?

Hey Guys.

I recently picked up a real clean Mossberg 500A from a pawn shop for $100. I got so excited about it and didn't even realize until I got home that I couldn't get the barrel nut off to remove the barrel. I've even tried with with a rag and vice grips, but still no luck. I know I can clean it with a bore snake, but I'd really like to take the barrel of. I took it into a local gun shop and they were absolutely no help unfortunately.

So my question to you guys is, does anyone have any ideas what so ever in removing getting this barrel off. I've been soaking it with PB blaster and penetrating oil for awhile now, but still no luck. Could I heat it up with a torch or something...

Let me know if you have any ideas

-Curtis

I have 3 model 500's and a few extra barrels never had that problem. Is it possable someone stripped out the tube it screws to and glued it ? if you dont get anymore help here maybe call or email mossburg and ask them the question.

Could of happen. I should have inspected it better, but just got a bit excited when I offered the guy a hundred dollar bill and he said he yes!

That's a good idea about calling them, I didn't even think about that

I dont think you can get the feed tube off without removing the barrel first or you could just replace them with a used one. There are a lot of barrels you can interchange for different types of hunting. If I go to storage this weekend il take one apart and see if its possable to do with the barrel on. Maybe pick up a copy of shotgun news and see if there are any used spare parts offered. its very basic and easy to disassemble you might figure out something on your own.

it's still a good deal even if you can't get it off. I wouldn't ruin the gun trying to remove it. You can still clean it and shoot it just like it is.

I ran across the video that spez posted but I found it on YouTube. Very helpful. Getting it apart was easy but the reassembly took some time. I just got finished with it when I sat down and read this.

That screw on the end of the magazine whould simply unscrew. If it wont, you might try a little PB Blaster. That might free it up.

Good luck.

Did you try following the step shown in the video wherein they had the slide pARTWAY forward? I took mine apart and I remember having trouble with the barrel nut until I had the slide partway forward.

No such luck. It's like one of those things now that I'm just determined to get the damn thing off. I just don't want to hurt the gun or tear it all up

Don't know if Mossbergs are similar, but the barrel nut on my Remington has teeth on it that catch on matching teeth from the other side. Those teeth are under pressure from a light spring and slide back when you turn the nut. If that sliding mechanism was frozen, I can see how the nut wouldn't budge. Can you get some PB Blaster at that area from the loading port?

Something that occured to me after hunting Sunday. There were 4 of us so we had to tear down 4 different shotguns to clean afterwards. One of them (cant remember the make) had a barrel nut that was reverse threaded. Might be worth a try on yours.

http://www.gun-parts.com/mossberg/ never shopped here but prices seem fair. Good selection of parts if something does get broken...
