Is there any other way of finding out the original color without the birth certificate?

If the original paint code sticker is gone or unreadable (typical), about the only other thing you can do is to dig into the car and try to find a spot with the original paint still on it and try to match that to color charts.

Yes it was a good clean body that someone started as a project and after paint let it sit for many years and it must have been outside for a wile before I got it.

If you have the chassis No. you can find it out. As I wasn't shure about this I asked this question in a geman beetle forum and they confirmed.
If you have the chassis no. you can get a birth certificate from VW in Wolfsburg for some EUROs. Or ask a local vw dealer if e can find it out for you (if your car is still listed in the central computer) |

I'm sure he already knows about the birth certificate - his original question was there a way to find out withOUT getting one. I doubt there's any other way though.
