Sal has his Thing listed in Classifieds.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=682458
It's on ebay too. Item 320316453923
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars-Trucks___High-...rms=65%3A1|39%3A1|240%3A1318

It's got a Jake Raby engine.
Current bid on eBay in only $4,250.
This Thing is worth a lot more than that!!!
I tried to point this out at Topica, and K-mann and his goons have locked me out.
Here's what I said regarding this:

Well, it isn't so.......so far........
It's listed on eBay, and so far the bid is $4,250 with a little over two days left.
Item # 320316453923
That's a lot different than the $25,000 asking price at The Samba.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=682458

What I said about Sal's Thing was no reason to lock me out.
Check it out.
I think Sal could use the $$$, and it's a very nice Thing.

Regards to all,
Steve

p.s. This isn't an ad.........just a heads up about a very nice Thing.
I have absolutely nothing invested in this matter, nada.
Check it out.

Hey there Volks,
I am Sal. I have a Thing 181. I decided to sell since I feel that alternate energy is the way to go with my Bed and Breakfast. We have been doing real well here in NY State as far as fuel prices. I want to put a wind mill up on my home and the only way to do this is to sell my THING. I hate to do it but I have only put 2000 miles on here since I purchased the T4 2270cc engine.
She runs just like Jake said she would. I know that the economy in the states is crap, but I thought that I would Samba my THING and maybe a person in Europe would want to take her across the pond.

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=682458

I have been so very busy cooking and building this B & B. I have not been that communicative on the Thing sites and the forums. I apologize for that.
Thanks for accepting my ad on this site and whatever feedback anyone has it would be greatly appreciated.
Yours
Sal

Sal, Good luck selling your Thing. You will be missed in The Thing community my friend. I hope you will hang around and maybe some day own another one. I for one would be very interested in hearing windmill progress reports, sounds very interesting.
Steve, you did not get locked out of The Topica list, you just have some settings wrong and the context of your message is not showing up. You did get locked out of the Thing Door Throughout America list on Yahoo because you do not work and play well with others.

Scott, Thank you for your well wishes. I have not had any time to enjoy my ZRATTHiNG this year. I drove maybe 100 miles this year. Sometimes you have to rid yourself of the toys to move on to better lifestyles and situations.
Believe me I do not want to sell my THING. It has to do with fuel and energy at this time.
Again thanks for your kind words.
PS Steve was directing me into a more positive way to sell my THING. He is I think trying to be helpful.

Sal,
Jake Raby actually had a message posted to this tread after I posted.
He said something about maybe being interested in your Thing.
Maybe you should give him a call or email him.
It might be worth a shot and turn into something.....you never know.
I have no idea why he deleted his post.

Regards,
Steve

For an asking price of $25k , i'd suggest some more pics , hubcaps and maybe even some original taillights.

The pics you have in the ads don't show show how nice it is.

ricco5 Mon Nov 10, 2008 4:13 pm

Hey Crofty,
I agree with you. My hub caps are wrapped up as not to get scratched. I have the original tail lights, but again they are wrapped up. I have loads of extras.
When the 7 days is up I will wait till the market get better. I realy wanted to let people know that my THING is up for sale.
Thanks again.
I even have a set of running boards that go with.
Later
Sal

Pics of the Tangerine exhaust are always a crowd pleaser! A good closeup of the engine would help a lot too. There's a lot of workmanship there that is not very visible:

Looks like Chris managed to get the muffler tips to exit the original bumper holes too! I've been wanting to see that anyway ;)

Sal is a great guy, a personal friend. We have broken bread as a family. He is my brother in many arenas. That is personal between he and I. Funny that I have knowledge of Things and Alternative Energy. I am helping Sal with his venture as he asks and I am able. Anybody would be lucky to ride in his car let alone buy it and own it...

Sal,
Just an idea, maybe it would sound stupid but : if you want to keep your Thing, need money and feel that alternate energy is the way to go, I would suggest you sell your Jake Raby engine which is worth a lot of $$, keep the Thing and install an electric engine charged by solar power. That could be a plus for your business. And sorry to say, but the economy in Europe is crap too. It's not only the U.S., it's the whole world...

Pierre,
What you say is true. I should think about just taking the engine and exhaust out and sell for the $20k it cost me with installation.
Then I ca still have my THING and maybe call her "HYDRO THING"
I have also been interested in getting the Hydro water thing happening.
Water is separated by electrical current and the fuel from the water is directed into the carburetors.
I still do not know how this works , I have just seen the utube version, and I am still in the process of searching for more information..
Pierre you have a great idea.
Yours,
Sal

Actually the engine cost me $15 K without installation. The exhaust cane to almost $4K with installation.
Sitting in your car.
Starting her up.
When she warms up all you hear is POWER.
Vraaaah, Vraaah, Vraaah.
Varoom is not the sound this engine makes.
It is an unbelievable sound. An only of it's kind of sound.
I checked Jake's web site and heard the engines on the Dyna that he has on a video short.
No Varoom!!!
Just Vraaah.
You have to own one to know what the heck I am talking about.
The more I talk about it the more I "DO NOT" want to sell her.
When I took her to the first car show I got 1st place in my category.
I was like a little Boy getting a Bazooka (bubble gum)from my Dad.
It was a memory I could never forget.
Well, getting back on track,
Yes it cost me a little over $20k.
But I am always negotiable.

Jake Raby Tue Nov 11, 2008 9:25 am

Damn right it cost that much.

Precision isn't cheap.

Over 100 hours of our lives are inside that particular engine and thousands of hours of R&D went into the development of the program that supports it and hundreds more like it over the past 20 years. True R&D isn't cheap and isn't supposed to be.

It has a set of cylinders that cost 3,000.00 alone along with only the best of components.

I don't discount our capabilities or level of dedication. When a purchaser like sal spends the money required they never complain- after all it is their decision and they know UP FRONT the amount of capital involvement they'll have to complete the project- no hidden cost and no cost elevations part way through the project.

Sal has been to my facility, he actually had dinner at my Dad's house when he came to have the engine inspected after it was installed into his 181. He saw first hand what went into that engine.
What Sal has is a car that can be driven anywhere at anytime at a power level over 3X greater than stock without the worry of overheating our engine failure. Thats not supposed to be cheap or "discounted".

This is not a typical one of my engines- not everything we build has the same cost- this one was taken to a different level because Sal wanted it that way. I create what people want and understand what they need and couple those two together to create something you can't buy anywhere else in this Industry.

Jake what you do is an art form, and art should never have to be justified.
It proves itself, over time.

ricco5 Tue Nov 11, 2008 9:54 am

THAT IS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT

Jake, if I said that It would have sounded like I was blowing smoke.
Thanks Jake for explaining in sweet terms what I have in my garage.
Jake, like I said in my last post, I am getting closser to "NOT SELLING".
Jake, Thanks again. Breaking bread with you and your Dad was a pleasure in itself.
I will NEVER forget that evening. The time you took with me and the time you took with my 181.
This is why I choose you as my engine builder.
Sure I may have been able to get a less expensive engine somewhere else, But with the depth of information I got from your website on how YOU successfully put together engines. I would have been an ass to go anywhere else...
I saw you at the Kublefest I think in July of 2002. Spoke to you about the T4.
You brought the VW Bus up and stated you guys were pushing her all the way.
I started saving my Money that year. When it came time "I DID IT
Thanks Jake for your very hard work, your dedication for what you do and for being a Veteran on a very appropriate day as today"VETERANS DAY ".
Thanks
Sal
HAPPY VETERANS DAY TO ALL THE MEN AND WOMAN WHO SERVED - THANK YOU FROM MY HEART

Jake Raby Tue Nov 11, 2008 10:11 am

Sal,
I'd keep the Thing...
If you want to make it into a more "Green" engine I can assist with that. Hell if you want to make it into a "Hybrid" I'll do that too!
You have been an excellent Client and follower of the program I have created and take so seriously.

Thank you for the Veteran's Day wish. This day and the Marine Corp Birthday are both very special days to me and many other thousands of Veterans.

I came to this very positive thread to see what a 19k VW engine looks like. It looks very nice.

After many years on this site, this is my first time visiting the Thing forum. This forum has a very different vibe, almost like visiting Amish Country. How come you guys always put "THING" in capital letters when you write about them?

Curiously waiting,

Major Woody
