I was recently shopping around for a project bug and I ran across a nice one (I was at a show) it wasnt on a trailer the owner was bragging about a rebuilt engine with tons of new parts and little rust (by the hinges) :x but it wasnt titled long story short I left the show with no bug. This has happened to me a few times anyone else?

Yep,Whats even better is to drive 5 hours after being told that it has a title, too bad it was never signed off by the previous owner or the bank.
It was a nice 65 bug but I had to walk away, wasn't worth the hassle.

bugs without titles are no problem. very easy fix.

When i was looking for a bug about a year ago i came across a a bug for 600 bucks. It was almost perfect no rust on the pan, engine ran and was all original, never crashed, and a perfect interior all for 600 bucks.Of course it had no title but i was still going to buy it because of how clean it was Until i found out it had $753 in back fees .

ive bought a few great deals with no titles. titles can be gotten here in calif if you fill out the right forms.
theres the correct way that takes more time and a "quick and dirty" way that could get you in some trouble if not careful.

the back fees part is always a killer though.
you can always call the local DMV and request a fee amount before you buy it. they will tell you how much it will cost, or tell you that it is out of the system.

out of the system is the best deal because you can tell the seller tofill out a "lost title" form and take it to DMV. in CA they wont know the difference.

but, this is illegal. try at your own risk

So $1353 was too much for it?3

nobody should be paying back fees on classic vw's in CA. As a "collector" of classic cars, back fees are waived even if it's you're only car

+1!

In fact, my friends and I always get excited if we come across one WITH a title. To me, a title is just the icing on the cake.

Dunno if this fits the thread but I got a basicly complete (with rotten chassis, but I digrest) Vokaro for $175 w/o title. Later on I bought a '73 chassis thats in relatively good shape with title & body plates for $200. So now the Vok technically has a title.......

They were there, just tucked inside her pants.

It's hard to get a title in the middle of a cow field/show grounds and find a tow home  it's all so complicated

Sorry, not being from CommiFornia, I have no idea what a "back fee" is or how it applies to the purchase of a vehicle. Anybody wanna enlighten me?
