What exactly do you mean by "vanagon" engine?
An early Vanagon engine is almost the same as a late bay engine. A late Vanangon engine is completely different and water cooled. |

year of my westy is 77
motor was out of a 83 vanagon
built by 356 legend bob garretson.
everything was replaced from head to head. heads were machined and done too. FI was thrown in the parts bowes and replaced with twin 40 webbers, bobs former bussiness partner clark anderson helped me with that. i built the custom headers and the thunderbird exhast sounds very sweat.
the block is was same i thinkl but every thing else did not fit. alt, all the tin , and i used the non heater box fan housing off the vanagon.
just with the replacement of the FI the retarded exhaust set up i gained 20% hp and at least 100 pounds off the motor..
bob put the mild cam in it for low end . and it worked . im convinced that i can pull my 49 little ceaser caned ham trailer for sure now.
im still working on the engine tin. i have 1 more piece to fab right under the alt. the vanagon tin just doesnt work . so its alum sheet bangin time..

An 83 Aircooled Vanagon has a 2.0 motor just like a baywindow, why didn't you just use a bay case to build up?
You shouldn't have to fab tin, the tin off a bay should work. |

| It usually does, but he's used a Vanagon fan shroud. |

Yessss they are, and they require or have no tin, the fan is in front and it's electric. |

why? i haven't made much sense of what the OP has been saying.
for instance:
"just with the replacement of the FI the retarded exhaust set up i gained 20% hp and at least 100 pounds off the motor.. ".
and he can't seem to post pics to illustrate.. |

| This whole thread is basically irrelevant to 99% of bus owners anyway, since they will not likely be replacing their motors with Vanagon motors. If it is a real deal, then the OP will pony up pics, otherwise it's pointless to even discuss. |

John
You're going to have to bring it on the food drive this weekend. I want to see!
Did you put the webers on it? Was that up the bypass or down?

Can't be to ultra secret, you would have saved alot of time if you just would have used your bay fan shroud and tin.
The biggest differance in a bay 2.0 and a Vanagon 2.0 is where the dipstick is. the heads are squareport like a 79 bay.
otherwise it's the same engine.
Here's a souped up air cooled engine ready to go into a Vanagon.
It's a Camper Special, he even used a bay case to build it on.
