This cool little 58 fell into my lap this week. My upholsterer gave the owner my number and I received a call out of the blue. He gave me the key to a storage unit where the car was stored. I was a little afraid of finding a body there when I arrived but instead I found a decent little car with crusty heater channels and a hole in the floor around the battery tray. I believe the mileage to be accurate at 83,000 miles due to the relatively light wear on the steering wheel and seats. I was going to flip the car but now that I've spent some time with the car, I'm thinking I'm going to roll it as is. Swap the beam, turn down the rear by a couple of clicks, and show off that beautiful patina.

I got the car home yesterday and spent a bit of time washing it down. It has it's issues but overall, I can work with it. Started polishing it out.

It's always amazing how well the paint has stood up after 50 years. I just use 2000 grit paper and 3M cutting compound followed by 3M polish. It took about an hour to do the roof. |

I would say awesome find-but since it landed in your lap...well, awesome score!
When you sand it with the 2000 grit, do you use water on it? Also, how do you protect (clearcoat) the paint after sanding? I'm just curious, and would appreciate any info. Thanks
Can't wait to see the final pics... |

Can't wait to see the final pics... Yes, I'll wet sand with 2000 then polish.
As far as protecting it goes, just wash and wax as normal as long as the paint isn't completely dried out. The strato silver oval in the background of the above pics is a good example of paint that has seen better days. I can polish it nicely but it hold a shine for long.

Wow, another car...Does that single car door lead to a 10 deep garage?
It looks pretty sweet for an Ontario find. The front looks like it saw a lot of gravel road action in its day - the outline where the bumper was is neat.
Does it need any pieces? I know of a 59 Cdn Standard that can give up some bits. |

:D Ya, that's a bit of a problem. We're breaking ground on a 4 car garage in the spring which will really help. Until then, I rent storage space and my parents live close and offer their garage to two of my cars and my single wheel trailers. I have two cars under construction and I drive the rest which makes it tricky since I can only have one car home in a garage at any time. It's a bit of a juggling act during the summer. |

The car is almost half done now. You can use any polish to get these results. If you buy the Meguirs stage 1 and 2, you can get a nice shine. I just happen to have 3M here so I used it along with a wool bonnet on my buffer. For a really high gloss, you can use a finishing glaze on a foam pan.
The paint on this 58 is shot already. I can't really screw it up. The primer is showing through in spots before I even washed the car. You have to be carefull on hard edges so you don't burn through. I mask off any hard edges with painter's tape to protect it from damage. |
