I am looking for any info I can find about this picture and car.
When / Where was the pic taken. Who owned the car at the time, etc.
Are there any more / different / better pics of the car available? Any pics of the dash? Can anyone tell what the tag says.
vielen Danke

Oval dash (?), slotted wheels (don't look like 356 16" slots), later bumpers, later taillights, no engine vents (? or is that just the lighting?), look like a oval era steering wheel ....
Looks like a home built "oval heb"??? |

This Heb is the real deal and it has been i Norway since the mid 90-ies. I am sure some of the Heb Registry guys on here can confirm the numbers and the history. If you search pictures from "SCC 2008", I am sure you will find much more pictures of it on the Net. It pretty much looks like this today as well. It is a 1949 with the Heb numbers and plaques intact.
The very brief story is something like this: Bought in Germany in the mid-50-ies by a returning US army guy. He took it to a bodyshop in Germany to update it before shipping it accross the Atlantic. Added the Oval dash, the wheels and the taillights - and the current owner still has the original receipt for this work along with binders full of papers that came with the car. It ended up being "restored" and showed in Michingan in the 70ies/80ies/90ies.. One long time, passioante owner up there. In the mid 90ies, all US and Japan-"scroungers" tried hard to buy it... but a young fellow from Norway ended up as the lucky winner. It will end up being a wonderful wonderful original car one day - in the meantime we love it here up north... My bet is that this picture is from a mid west show in the 80ies.. |

Yes, it is most likely the one that is in Norway now.
This would be the current stage of it and will be restored to original specs. in a near future.

| That is a piece of Volkswagen history that deserves to be restored. After all, that heb is equally rare as the other hebs! |

Personally, if it is documented that it was "updated" in the 50's or 60s, I would leave the updates. I think having that history, especially if the mods were done well, adds to the unique character of the car. That, and it really sets it apart from "all those other Hebs" you see every day...
JMO of course.... |

I hear what John is saying, but I would probably return it back to dead stock...... however.. the first thing I would do is..
1. Remove the ghastly flower decals (Norwegian Hippies?)
2. Put that Front Bumper.. on the front of the car.. and not the back. |

Hello,
Yess it is a Heb and a real one. The body nr is know by me and I let it the owner choise to unveil it.
It is also an early one. some details are different to later cars.
I know what I am talking about. I studied it too long ( according to my lovely wife)
It is indeed in Norway now, the dash is a one point changed to an oval one and is not correct for that car, but If it was mine, i could live with that.
I wonder if the aufbau plate is still there. Maybe someone here can help or the owner?
Greetings. Peter |

Man! As long as the paperwork confirms the work to change the dash back in the mid-fifties, personally I'd leave it be and restore it as it is now..but I too would change the bumpers and ditch the stickers... but what do I know?

More than the owner... he may have a Heb... but he doesn't know the difference between a front and rear bumper? |

Hey!!! You can't tell as easilly on a Heb! They have a rear hood that looks
close to the same as the front hood! :D Actually, I never even paid attn to that... it looked odd, but did not distract me from the rest of the car. I was too busy trying to look at the rest of it and wondering about the flower stickers.

I belive the brackets and picture angle trick you here. It is a proper rear bumper - with the starter crank bracket/hole on it as well..
Let me tell you - the owner knows more about Splits and Hebs than many - and he has got a barn full to proove it. |
