View original topic: CO2/Argon tank: Owned or rented?

I got a tank with my welder years ago. The tank is National Welders. I was told by the PO he owned it. It's almost empty now, but I'm not so sure if it's leased or if I own it. I asked the guy at National Welders and he would not tell me how to identify it and just said he would need to look at it. Can anyone tell me how to distinguish from rented or owned cylinders?

Thanks!

If it has National Welders stamped on it then the odds are the tank belonds to them. None of my bottles are stamped with a company name, they have a serial number and test dates, I always have my bottles filled and returned to me. You might as well bite the bullet and take it in to them, that or try to get it filled or swapped at another welding dealer.

I don't know about your area, but I couldn't find anybody in my area that would refill a privately-owned bottle. I had to take my brand new empty bottle and trade it in on a scruffy looking (but full) used bottle.

Now when I need a bottle, I just drop off my empty and grab a full one out of the rack, just like the propane bottle exchange at the local quickie-mart.

The welding supply stores in Albuquerque and Las Cruces always fill my gas bottles, except Acetylene & Propylene, those I can swap or wait two weeks to get mine back filled. But my Oxy, Argon, CO2 and Weld Mix are filled while I wait.

My Acetylene and Oxygen tanks have National Welders stamped on them, but I own them. When empty I just trade them in for full ones.

x2...I've got a Tractor Supply store close to my house, they do argon/co2 exchange. I found that to be the easiest for me, but I'm not blowing thru bottles like some of the pro welders on this forum :D

i just lease one for 60.00 a year.not much but if you have issues with leaking valves they will replace the tank with a full one n/c.owned bottles sometimes have a specific code on them that the supplier would know.its not a given on most.like was said when its empty just return and swap for full one, real easy, rather than wait a day for them to fill yours.
