No, I'm not giving up my Thing. But thanks are in order all the same.

It's to all you members of this forum. For your forthrightness, willingness to share, and lack of flaming.

What prompted this? Being on a BMW motorcycle forum. Yeesh. Put on your asbestos underwear for those folks. Flaming, back biting, name calling, I could go on and on.

It's a very civil environment here, and I for one appreciate it greatly.

I vacated the DeLorean scene for the same reason. I still have the car, but don't participate in the shows, cruises and socials. I too, have noted that the VW scene is much more mellow.

It's all good.

I was just thinking the exact same thing.

I had just discovered the Topix forums where I was hoping to find info on events and happenings in my town. I was disappointed to see that almost every discussion was polluted with racist comments, personal attacks and political views that had nothing to do with the topics in question.

It's the same story with the discussion groups that I visit for my other hobbies. It's so bad now that I don't even bother with them anymore. This whole "Age Of Communication" that we live in isn't all that it's cracked up to be.

By comparison The Samba is a relative oasis. Yes, you'll come across the occasional petty bickering or name calling, but overall the majority of folks are very helpful and friendly. The Thing forum has even less nonsense and for that, I too am thankful.

It's easy to slip up and I've done it a few times myself. Just the other day someone posted an off-topic comment here that ruffled my feathers. I started to write a reply and thought better of it. Nothing helpful would have come of it so I just blew it off. I think a lot of folks here do the same thing. Just one of the reasons why I like it here so much.

The Thing forum is particularly nice, welcoming, ... It's true with the T3 forum too. It can be a little more rude with the bus guys, both split and bay window forums, or the buggy one. As I have almost all sorts of ACVWs, I visit several forum sections, and I can feel the difference...

I agree as I stated in my thanks to everyone on the forum last month. I have always owned Corvettes (and still do) but the Thing group and forum is Great!! Everyone is very helpful and nice.

Thanks, Eric

That is because the Thing is the coolest of all air cooled. Even show car splitty double cab guys pull over to admire a daily driver Thing. We are a close group because we all know we have the coolest of the cool.

Brother Kubelmann is correct, and by default that makes me and you the coolest of the cool (despite what our spouses say!). But I also think that the Thing is a very unique and somewhat rare vehicle, and it takes a unique and rare individual that would want to own one. Can I go out on a limb and say a unique individual with a great sense of humor who doesn't mind getting attention?

Not even the Unimog and Pinzgauer crowd are as cool as we are...

Allright, maybe they're not the best example... after all, any vehicle that you can run down to the grocery store AND use as a multi-purpose weapons platform can be pretty cool too I guess. But you get what I'm saying.

I've toyed with the idea of adding a Haflinger to the stable more that once. (Pun intended!)

Jake Raby has a Prinzgauer that he brings to our VW get togethers periodically and is also in the process of restoring his Thing. (Long story about the Thing ownership) Also some interesting stories about his Pinzgauer and some of the mud slinging crowd. Talk about getting attention with your car. A Pinzgauer will do it as well.

I've owned two Porsches in the past, a 911 Targa and a 912 Targa (which I miss greatly).

When I drove the Porsches, I was ignored, or worse, taunted by Camaro and Mustang drivers. "Prick in a Porsche" or what have you.

The Thing, by comparison, is a gregarious car. People love it. Little kids faces light up, older folks stop me and say "...I had one..." or wanted one. I get stopped and asked about it all the time.

Heck, I even drove mine into work today at 27F and no heat. It wasn't half bad. Gotta get the gas heater working though!

I loved my Pinz, but someone made me an offer that I could not refuse and I let it out of the stable...

I am looking for a 6X6 Pinz to replace it with ASAP!
