OK.. I have been toying with this and am on the brink of insanity!! If you had a good running 2.0 motor, would you put that in a 72 bus... or would you stick with a t-1 motor?? I would like to hear from those who prefer one or the other a,pros and cons. I have a 72 bus,it has a single port motor in it .gotta get that out!!! And I got a 2.0 motor from a 77,it runs, and is good, plus a few choices of 1600's to swap with. I was thinking.. since all my other vw's have t-1 motors, why not keep it all the same,ez to swap if needed..help me decide.. I also have a standard ,clean 1.8 case,crank,rods,etc.. that I may be selling off so I may just build a 2 ltr.t-1 motor for the bus.. I also have a 2110 that I recently tore down, everything checked good,so I will be putting that back together soon.I can also swap with the 2017 in my bug.. Robbing Peter to pay Paul..know what I mean...I was going to take the stock 1600 out of my Thing, put the 2110 in that, and maybe put the stock 1600 in the bus..or visa versa...if I am convinced to not use the 2.0bus motor....Thanks.. My head is spinning!!

Boy, the purists are going to chime in here! I just got a 1972 with a real old 1700. I've been searching the forums, researched Jake Raby. Most would say stick w/type4. I would love, to but it is cost prohibitive for me. I have a '74 dual relief case, mustache bar and custom hangers for the '72. Plus many other t-1 parts. My history w/ the subject; I had a '67 Westfalia W/a GEX 1835( yeah I was one of the lucky ones), It ran great! I also had a '72 transporter w/a 1600 dp all stock( followed the Dead for years w/ no problems, IT WAS SLOW). I am now going to build a fresh 1835 for my new '72. But I will also start saving for a Raby kit or something similar.Good luck

Hey Kevin.

Do you have all the tin, and stuff to convert? I would say do it. Doug has done a ton of them, and is a good resource. (Isn't his blue bus converted?) I imagine most of the people here will say that the Type 1 is underpowered, but if it worked for 71, why not 72?

Also, Mike (Hayes, ThingAdmin) has been running a Type 1 in his 77 for years, and loves it. Talk to him.

You going to get that ready for the Classic?

Type IV....don't bastardize it.

72 came with a Type IV from the factory, so I'd stick with another Type IV engine. It will be easier and it will give you more hp and torque.

Since it was originally type 4. Put a type 4 in it.

Yeah.It has been converted to a t-1 alreaady,I got everything for the t-4 conv.also.just some wiring change .nothin too big. I got several exhausts also ,so I may use the exh. from the 1.8 motor instead of the 2.0.. Just waiting on a clutch and pp and flywheel ,since the 2.0 is bigger then what the 1.7 r 1.8 is. Doug's bus is running a t-1 ....been for years!! Mike got that 6 rib that makes a ton of difference on the hwy.Yep..gettin it ready for the classic.hopefully it'll be done. at least that is my goal.THe motor in it now is way underpowered, a single port ..PO,not me.. that is what got me to want to go 2.0. either t1 or t4. ..but I prefer torque.Makes a difference going up hills and passing.when the need arises .
Look more like I am going with the t-4. At least I got some extra good heads from the 1.8 .
the 2.0 is a GE 034706 eng. code.Oval ports..looks to be from a 1978 bus,not a 77 ..my bad.. ...the 1.8 is a GC010068., 74 vw t3 411/412. or 74 porsche 914.

There is nothing "similar" :-)

Jake,no disrespect. I have read all the best respect for you and your product. when I said "similar" it meant, .... I would love to eat a N.Y.strip but I can only afford sirloin. So not all of us can get what we want,"But if we try some time..... we get what we need" even if it might not be a better choice.
