I had to replace the floor under the gas pedal and found a rusty flat maybe spring steel piece of metal under the hinge of the pedal. Is was these a return spring? No pictures of the flat metal but it fit right in the middle of the hinge.

Yes, you need it if you want your pedal to come back up smoothly. I'm sure you could run without it, but it is ment to be a return spring. WW sells them, but are out of stock at the moment. http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=211721619

That what I was thinking a spring. I was thinking of making one out of banding strapping that is used for shipping goods. The spring that was there was gone but driving it allways came back on its own.

The band strap would probably work good, it's about the same thickness I believe.

Now that I'm thinking about when I put my aluminum pedal in, I think that spring also helped keep the pin in place, but I'm not 100% sure.

that is completely inaccurate. the only thing that leaf spring does is hold the pin in the bracket and the pedal. without the leaf spring, the pin can work its way out and the pedal can fall off.

Thank you Hazetguy, now I'm 100% about that holding the pin. I couldn't totally remember. I know I tried it without that spring plate & the pedal felt kinda dead(slow reaction), but it could have been because my pedal is aluminum.
