So. My 72 std is running again after all wiring replaced. Replaced the carb and did a tune up. She runs great while she's actually running. Once I stop at a light the idle is perfect. But the second I touch the throttle she wants to sputter and die. but the second I let off the throttle she comes back to life. Checked my gaskets and all vaccuum ports and there are no leaks. Everything is plugged and sealed. My only other thought was the fuel pump.. any thoughts to this?? thanks in advance! :wink:

Sounds like it is the accelerator pump to me, check the pump linkage and diaphragm.

It may also be a timing issue. Do you have SVDA or DVDA?

Carb is brand new. Could the accel pump be bad already??

What is SVDA and DVDA??

Its a 72 std. Everything is original replacements.

Ok. So i called the place I got my carb from and they asked about a vaccuum advance dizzy. Dont have one of those. They said the carb I bought has a hole in the butterfly for a vaccuum adv dizzy and that I needed to plug the hole with a pop rivet.

So now my questions...

A.. does this sound correct?
B.. should I convert to a vaccuum advance dizzy?
C.. are there any benefits to this?

Thanks again!
::sorry guys... newbie to this and trying my best to understand things!::

The non vacuum advance distributor works amazingly well... with dual carbs.

On a single carb motor, I would sudjest finding a nice stock vaccum advance distributor, no flat spot, better economy, less wear on motor (it WAS made for a vaccum advance distributor), probably lower operating temp also..

Good luck,
Nathan

DVDA=dual vacuum distributor
SVDA=single vacuum distributor

I am actually thinking of going with a set of dual webers once all the kinks are worked out. So maybe I should keep the dizzy I have and do the rivet trick. See if that works maybe?

Got another question now though....

I see pics of people having the fuel filter AFTER the pump and people talking about having the filter right after the tank or BEFORE the pump. Whats the difference and does it really matter whether the filter is BEFORE or AFTER the pump???

Thanks. Again.

Soon as I get my lil baby all washed and waxed I'll be whoring up some pics. I'm so proud I'm doing this from the ground up! And most of all it RUNS! yay!

It is generally accepted that putting the fule filter in the engine compartment is a bad idea. Most everyone suggests to put it up front under the tank before your fuel line enters the center tunnel, or above the tranny where the line exits the same tunnel. There have been several people who have had fires due to the filter being in the engine compartment. I personally moved mine under the tank. It's a little harder to change that in the engine compartment, but it gives me a lot more piece of mind :D .

OK. So I have adjusted and re-adjusted the carb following all the instructions I can find and even put a rivet in the little hole on the throttle plate. Still stumbles off idle when warm. WTF?! Starting to wonder what the big deal is. Maybe I should just limp the little PIMA to Chirco and see if they can check her out for me...

What carb and what distributor? - By the way, you could just plug that line on the carb with a rubber vacuum cap.....

You may want to take a look for a vacuum leak. You can spray WD-40, starter fluid or whatever you want (be careful you don;t catch your engine one fire). Use the little plastic hose on the nozzle and spray around the gaskets and throttle shaft area - try to narrow down where the problem is (if there is a leak). You are listening to any change in the idle if you hit a vacuum leak.

If you have one and fix it, go back through and readjust the carb settings since everything has changed.

K. So there was no leak. Had to "fine tune" the carb with some help from a friend. She runs great now! No stumbles and purrs like a kitten. For a VW anyway! :lol: Pics to follow soon! Thanks again for everyone's help!
