hi
bought an engine and have pulled it apart due to a wee problem

anyway its supposed to have a 82mm forged crank( ita a type 1 engine)but id like to confirm what it is before i rebuild

there are no markings bar a number where the pullet bolts on

94022

it has olways drilled through it
and a few allen headed grub scews on the flanges

thanks

Measure along the center of one crank cheek the distance from the outside of one rod journal to the outside of the other rod journal on the opposite end of the cheek. Take that measurement, subtract the diameter of one rod journal and that's your stroke.

you can tell by the parting line. wide line = forged.

here's a thread with parting line pics: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=327638&start=20

My vote is cast. However, a higher quality cast crank can be stronger than a lower quality forged one. The manufacturer and model would be more of a concern to me.

There may be another identification mark that you can't see with it assembled.

Can't tell if it's cast or forged until you take pics of the mentioned parting line.

I do know that you have the rods marked wrong.
From flywheel to pulley it is 3-1-4-2

colinD Tue Nov 18, 2008 8:48 am

rods were marked for reference only, not as per cylinder or anything

didnt see anyparting line, however ill get another look at it tommorrow

cheers bill, Im sure its alvageable, the cost of machining in the uk, it may economically a paperweight

Bill, do they CNC machine those cranks to remove the forging marks? Where do you get them?

Bill271 Tue Nov 18, 2008 9:18 am

You will usually never see a parting line on a fully machined crank, take some pics of the bearing where it seized so we can see what kinda damage ya got

Pm sent
