View original topic: What year bus is most common? Goto page 1, 2  Next

This may be a stupid question, and not to mention impossible to answer, but I will ask anyhow. I am curious to know what year bus is the most common and what is the least common. Yeah I understand there are not too many buses left from 1949 through 1955 and yes the older they are the more rare they are. But I was just curious because I have been to a few bus shows like Bulli Brigade and CTS and have not seen too many 64's. I have a 64 and I know they are out there but I have not come across many. Is there a particular year where there may only be a few buses left? And what year would have the most, 1967? Good luck!

1964 is very common. Production figures:

I would say 65/66 the most, 50 the least.

Plenty of 64's all these are for sale right now

HaHaHa I never even thought about searching the classifieds! Man am I an idiot or what. I am just bored because it is raining. I never really thought my 64 was rare or anything, its just funny that when i go to shows I dont see that many. Even though I have only been to like 5 of them! Ok what about walkthroughs? Was there a lot of them? :)

My 64 has european tail lights stock. No annoying 9 pin relay to go bad. Mine also has stock locking ignition. Mine also has a sliding door. Havnt seen another one in person. Have only heard of them on here.

'64 didn't have the 9-pin relay.

A bit of a guess but I'd say 65 too. I've seen a lot of 65s.

Except for Trucks, there are less later trucks.

IF you assume that on average all years of buses were lost at the same rate you would have to think the 64-66 years are the most prevalent. They are the youngest and had the highest production figures, 67 must not be too far behind but did have lower overall production figures. I am going by memory here so may be out a year or two depending on actual production figures.

X2.

My bus is a '65 and I personally know about half a dozen people with '65s.

I've noticed alot of '67 WalkThroughs, in fact most '67's I've seen are walkthroughs, or maybe it's just because I own one.

Along this same topic....has there ever been estimates made about the total number of split busses still alive, either US or worldwide? Although the production numbers were quite high through the 60's, we all know that these economical "family vehicles" were well used and abused, not to mention the rust issues. The vast majority of them probably bit the dust within their first twenty years? I'm sure any estimate would be a loose guesstimate, 'cause you never know what people have squirreled away in their garages, barns, etc.

Whenever people say stuff like "196X models aren't rare", its a relative term. Even in SoCal, I can go days without seeing one, and I drive around SoCal alot. That's what prompted my question.

Of course, the times I see the most busses around are during the Classic weekend or after an OCTO show :D

Hey bushaus I was actually thinking the same thing. It would be awesome to know how many splits are driving around these days. I have lived in Raleigh NC for like 7 years and have only seen 2 split windows driving around. Bulli Brigade is considered one of the biggest on the East coast and there was 145 splits there this year which is pretty good. I think most of them were from the Florida area.

I have two '65s. '65s rock. It's the only year you could get my favorite interior (Mesh Gray aka "salt & pepper") in a Deluxe. Actually, now that I think about it, it was the only year that all Standards and Deluxes only had one interior choice.

I like my '65 because it has those cool chrome "turret" style washer squirters. I think that was '65 only.
