I have been oin Aohu for five days, driving to the surf on the North Shore from Waikiki.
I have looked hard but have seen no Things, about seven vanagons, one 77 bus, one squareback and one corner window 61-64 bus.
I thought that Hawaii was the land of Things!
Can't wait to get back to get my Thing ready for Syncro de Mayo. |

Normally I believe they can take in 75 Syncros. If that 75 is not met by a certain date, they then let in other vehicles, but I thought normally they needed to be Vanagon, but I may be wrong. Last year there was an Iltis but they also brought a Vanagon that towed the Iltis in. Cool rig.
I think on Saturday people can show up for the fun of it but only those that paid for the camping get the grub, camping, etc...
There is an Syncro De Mayo yahoo forum that keeps everyone abreast of what is happening. You can probably confirm things there.
BTW, 2009 SDM will be run but someone new as John stepped down for this year as their is a wedding conflict that week. The new person I think is Seth and he knows his Syncros. He owns that slick orange one seen in various SDM yahoo flicks.
Since my Syncro is sold, I may not be attending myself unless they don't get their 75 Syncros or I buddy up with a friend that I met their these last couple of years.
It is a great time at this event though.

Is there a link to SDM 2009?
I have asked but got no replies.
Amyway if SDM bans Things I want to get a group of Bay Area Thingers to go to Hollister in the spring.
We have
Crofty'
Ian Epperson
Jeff Kolb
Jeff Gilleland
New black thing fro BLTN
another Thing from BLTN (David Laubscher)
and myself
We should be able to get a forum and even if we do not go on the really hard bits we should ave fun, and it is only an hours drive away. |

Roger has a Thing... but may take some coaxing.
Don't forget about Frank Raines between Mt. Hamilton and I5. Carnegie is out here too but their Vehicle area is small from what I've heard. |

It used to be, but I saw only one there back in September. E-mail Surfarii and see if you can hook up. He's only a 30 minute drive out of Waikiki. |

yes, I did forget Roger.
He does have a 73 Thing, but I have nor seen it run in 5 years. Anyway I will try, but first I have to get my engine & tranny in to my Thingster.
But we could get a good group of Things . I was told that the SVRA near livermore was more for dirt bikes and ATV's. but we could try that too. |

Here is the old site. I am not sure if they will re-use it for 2009 or not, but my guess is they will.
http://syncrodemayo.org/
And here is the Yahoo forum.

Thanks, I have no response from the old site, but see in the Yahoo groups that it will be the first weekend in May.
Are there Things who would like to attend. I can try to get a campsite, as the drive to ollister is not too bad. |

The one near Livermore is Carnegie. The other, Frank Raines, seems to be a spring and fall only kinda deal.

| I live near this place, and have never heard of it. Sound like it would be a fun place to take the Thing. |

| Crofty, have you been to Carnegie? I heard it was more for motocross bikes and ATV's. Hollister seems best. I guess I will scout it out in my 63 singlecab. Then post pics to this forum. |

I have been- years ago. It's still small for automobiles so I hear. I think Frank Rains would be a better place than Carnegie for automobiles.
It's a little over an Hour from my place. |

Hello
Hollister Hills is a great place to drive. There are some interesting trails.
I was at Syncro de Mayo in 2004.
My pictures and videos are here :
http://181spirit.com/portail_phpBB/index.php?page=32
I met there Craig S. (a VW Thing owner, Samba member "spaeth"). He was there with a green Doka. I went there as a passenger of a Subaru powered Syncro from the San Francisco area.
If you organize a VW Thing event in Hollister Hills (end of May 2009 or beginning of June), I could be interested.
Regards

Hey sam-W
I live on Oahu . There are quite a few Things here but it is surely not the land of things. I think that title goes to Mazatalan if fiberglass reproductions taxi's count.
Did you see any of the contest on the north shore. It looks like the swell is building. I surfed last night and am going again right now. :)
Ian , Hope you had fun on your Maui part of the trip. CAll or PM me with the details. Aloha
If anyone makes it to the Island look me up.
Surfarii Aka John |
