View original topic: HELP! 30miles outside of Syracuse NY......Tranny/axle/? Goto page 1, 2, 3  Next

I was driving across the country and back again when the unthinkable happenned. Stopped at a rest stop....when I went to start again the bus hesitated a bit when I went to start off..but then went okay. began driving on interstate..when the revs went up and a loud buzzing from the back end started. it was kind of similar to a slipping clutch but noisier...I pulled off and nursed it but couldn't give it any gas or it would slip and buzz. then when I coasted to a stop...it was finished. I can start it, put in gear.....but when I go to leave nothing it spins and buzzzes and the bus doesn't move. Any ideas? I just paid $70 for a tow to a motel now I'm paying 90 a night.....need to figure out the problem asap! Any shops around Syracuse, NY? ideas?

I'm thinking possibly a broken axle? or Tranny? or reduction gears?

tomorrow I'm going to try lifting it up to check what I can see

open to ideas.....cause right now I'm FUKT

oh and it's a 66 with reduction gears

Yep, best case scenario.
I suppose if I were by myself, I'd chock up the wheels with something, pop off the rear hub caps, start the bus and put it in first. Slowly let out the clutch, walk around and see if one of the axles is spinning.

VDubTech is pretty active in the Bay forum and lives in Syracuse.

Hopefully he can help.

Yep sounds like a drum had that happen on a road trip once. We stole a drum off a bus being hauled back. Make sure the tighten the fudge outa that rear drum nut!

god you guys are great...it is a spun drum on the right side. Now the second problem.....anybody have a Drum? I have cash with me.....I know we can work something out......but I think this scenario is going to involve some trust! I will send the money! I can give all of my contact details etc.....and if your between NY and Washington State or BC I can deliver money in hand....but I will need it sent Fed Ex or UPS overnight or something. Any ideas?

Sincerely

Use the Member search list , Stall20 aka Tim is in Rotchester (90 miles west) Also Cris Torlasco (That's his screen name) is outside Albany- (about 150 miles East), Both may know some one that can help you out.

I'd guess you don't have the Transporter Tourist & Travel directory ?
It is a great source of contacts when on the road, Join N.E.A.T.O. or L.I.M.B.O. both send you the TTT directory when you join.

isnt the drum the same 64-71? i think you can get one from most any auto parts shop. i spun i drum......once,make sure the drum is very, very tight,i think they are to torqued to something like 250ft lbs if i remember right.

hansend23 Mon Nov 17, 2008 5:21 pm

you can drive on them sometimes.this happened to me last spring
and a few times in the past.you put your tool on it and put it in reverse.and let the engine tighten it.first put it on the drivers side so the farward push is always wanting to tighten it.i rolled like this althe way ,well all summer.1500 miles.on the left you put it in first.with a cheeter bar on the ground.or if you can get one for shure do that.it will work!

CafeRouge Mon Nov 17, 2008 5:24 pm

Really?

that helps...right now VDUBTECH has mentioned he might be able to help...so that is good news....if not I will try the local parts shop

thanks

If you can't get one from anyone local, Johns Bug Shop - Across the border in Niagara Falls Ontario will have one. It is a pretty big shop, but its a good 150 miles from where you are.

Dennis is back on the road and headed West. I didn't have a Split Bus drum here but a friend of mine did, so I drove out to his place today to get it and then drove out to where Dennis was staying to see if we could get him back on the road. Took the day off of work, but I hope that if I'm ever in a similar situation someone would do the same for me. Anyway, met Dennis and his Bus, brought out the jack and some tools and changed out the drum. Looks like he had Brazilian drums on it and it spun it smooth. We got the drum changed out and the tire back on and he took a hot lap around the hotel and deemed it good to go. Hopefully he won't have any problems with the other drum before he gets home.
