So, I failed the test twice in the last month.

It's a pretty extensive test here in Boulder : CO,CO2,Nox,etc...

I replaced my cat, leaned out the mixture on my AFM(I'm out about 4.5 turns), turned up the idle a bit so that when I was waiting it would keep the temp up. I filled up with premium and put in a can of HEET (suggested by TK) The oil was pretty used synthetic (3000mi) Cap/rotor/plugs/air filter all have about 3000mi.

My numbers all dropped by about a third, just from changing out the cat and I passed.

I do have a question for those who may know, I have a 2.1 in my 85 weekender but it's tested as a 1.9 Should I be telling anyone about this when I have it tested or keep my mouth shut?? Thanks, Todd.

:-S whats the point? anyway congrats =D>

I don't really get the need for comment like yours, if you read this forum with any regularity there are many posts about failing emissions and how/what people have done to pass...informing others was my point...what's yours?

I think he meant what's the point in telling the testers about your engine, not telling the Samba readers. You passed, that's what counts. That's the way I read it.

he was saying whats the point of telling about the 2.1.... hence the shhhh smiley :-S

I think he meant whats the point in telling at the DMV that you've got a 2.1 not a 1.9 in your vanagon. In some states they base the emissions standards on what ever is newer, the year of the engine in the car (if you told them it was swapped) or the year the car was made. It is done to lower emissions output. If you tell them youve got a 2.1 it might be even harder to pass emissions testing next time.

The point of possibly telling them of the 2.1 would be that a larger displacement engine I would guess may have possibly higher cut off values for emissions? Todd.

BTW I apologize for not understanding the earlier comment. Todd

I doubt it. Emissions standards are ever tightening, I would think that the best case senario, if you told them, would be that they just dont care, worst case you would now have to meet the standards of the year of the motor.

the larger displacement of the 2.1 shouldn't matter since the emissions testing usually measures a ratio of one particle to another, like ppm (particles per million) or a percentage of overall emissions. A larger engine will pollute more as a result of pumping more air/fuel through it, but the ratio (ppm) or percent of overall emissions that are allowed to be pollutants should remain the same anyway.

Glad to hear you passed the smog test. I sort of dred that every other year test too. Congratulations and way to go :!:

Thanks for the info, yeah, here in CO from just 2 years ago when I was last tested the dropped the NOX by 50% of what was allowed then!

If they continue this way I may have to splice in another cat and run 2 side by side :?

Todd,

Mum is the word when you enter any state's emissions testing facilites.

You'll open up another can of worms by confusing the hell of the mad men checking your Van out for whatever's coming outa the tail pipe.

I don't think it really matter's if it's a 1.9 or 2.1 just as long as it passes their test anyway.

I had a few years back a cranked up LT-1 small block in a Full sized Blazer--no emissions coponent's on the engine at all--
I hooked up a small oxygen bottle
under the back seat, and ran it a foot in front of the end of the tailpipe.
Before entering the testing station I would crack the valve of the bottle open.
The truck passed every time.

Do you think I would tell them I was running an emmisions free Hot Rod?

Nupe--

Silence is Golden.

Thanks Terry,

I 'll pass that one along to my dad, he'll love it, he has helped run car shows for hot rods in the midwest for 30 years and they are always joking about ways to pass emissions, that's one of the best i've heard yet. Todd

Terry,

You evil genius, you! Man, I love the ideas I get from this forum.

Brilliant.
