is this the "Fish Egg" diffuser for 61's? Are they darker and is there any stamp or anything on them, ive got a couple but they look like repos!!
This is not my taillight!!!

and are these the # style for correct 61 lights
Are the housings for the lense itself a one year only, ive seen some like this, and others with just four tabs holding in the lense!!

VW often would have more than one manufacture contracted at the same time for the same part.

From using the "Search" feature for "NOS":

Thanks those are both good threads, but they didn't answer my 61 year specific question!

i thought those difusers where in all of them? Or are there 2 different patterns of difusers?

No problem, you are welcome.
Only 1961 part we have found is the bulbholder.

Both Hella and Hassia made lenses for the 1956-61 time period, and there was another lense for the Sweden market. Also have seen at least 2 versions of difuser/darkening lenses.

Parts manual lists :
111 945 231 Reflector and lens, Germany (Chassis No. 1-929 746 up to 3 856 471), & Export market lens (Chassis No. 1-929 746 up to 4 010 994).

111 945 233 Australia & Italy only lens - Brake/indicator light (up to Chassis No. 4 010 994).

Have seen a photo and couple of sentences in either a Poplar Science or Mechanics issue in 1955 or 56 saying the new Beetle talilight was considered too bright by authorities.
Would not be suprised if the defuser/darkening lense was introduced due to this.

Alan Willis wrote: Man,all of these "experts" failed to mention the '61 only bulb diffusers and lenses on the '61 taillights;'61 diffusers are "fish egg" style,'57-'60 has horisontal lines, and late '55-'56 are smooth. As for the glass lense,it should have two part #'s along each side of the lense opposed to the '57-'60 which had just the one set of #'s on the bottom.
I guess this quote from the thread below is what sparked my curiosity
