I just purchased a '67 Squareback...it is very complete but is missing a few little odds and ends...This is the deck lid and it is missing a few emblems...which are the correct ones for a '67?

A US Spec '67 should just have "Volkswagen" and a solid bar underneath it. That style of "1600" was never placed on the Type 3.

Agreed. It's a Porsche '1600' emblem.

Everything but the 1600 is right. It should have the "Volkswagen" script and the line if you want it to be factory correct.

Instead of the solid bar, as pictured above below the 'VOLKSWAGEN' script, would 'automatic' script be in its place on automatic transmission equipped Squarebacks?

My 69 FI/AT square hatch chrome looks just like my 67 square! :x I've been been thinking of hacksawing an AUTOMATIC/STICKSHIFT emblem to mount the AUTOMATIC on my 69.

thanks for clarifying on this one guys

On non- North American models, the line is a second badge that says "VARIANT". In North America, Chrysler sued over the term "VARIANT" because it was "too close" to "Valiant". Thus, in North America we get the "line" as a way of filling the holes.

"VARIANT" script isn't difficult to find. There's an early and a late to match the "VOLKSWAGEN" script designs.

The "automatic" goes on the right side, like on mine.

underneath the "Volkswagen" badge, I've seen 2 versions:
a model marker:

and the "variant" script:

With the spacing on your "1600" badge, it definitely looks like it's off of a late 356.

Hmmm...it's weird that the holes behind the 1600 don't look like they are an after thought...Is the '67 motor a 1500 or 1600? I had a '67 back in high school and all it had was the "Volkswagen" emblem with the line under it...but I don't remember there being that much space between them.

Mike Fisher Tue Nov 18, 2008 2:31 pm

There is 1.875" vertical between the 2 sets of holes on my 67 & 69.

The '67 engine is a dual-port 1600cc.

The 1500 went on Canadian Variants, again, because of the "Valiant" thing.

Well that means I'm definitely putting my VW-VARIANT-E script back on my Roadster. 8)
I guess I should drill some holes for the Automatic script for my wife's car too while I'm at it.

Same here, mine and John's hatches look to be the same, maybe it's a weird option or regional thing?

Hans and Fritz were bored down at the factory so they stuck on some Porsche badges to spruce the dumpy Variants up a little..

Whatever the case, I'm keeping mine. Looks cool.

*Edit* Thinking about it, since mine is OG paint, and the holes in Buster's pic are far wider out on where my line is, how would the badge have been added where the line "should" be? If they had moved it down, I'd have holes in my hatch, and it clearly hasn't been welded. Food for thought.

I'm almost willing to bet money that Buster's hatch is a transplant from an earlier car with the earlier script style, hence the hole spacing.

If you look closely at your hatch, it appears that the '1600' is slightly off center to the right- not a factory job.

Also, it looks like your red hatch may have had a respray- I've never seen factory VW paint "patina" in a fisheye pattern like that.

AND... the 1600 badge is DEFINITELY 356. No doubt whatsoever about it. I've seen these badges mistakenly advertised as VW badges on here many times.

All that said, YES, it IS COOL! :P

You make a good point, now that I look again, it is a bit off to the right..

Concerning the paint, the fisheye is indeed a bit strange, but the color matches the rest of the car, before and after I buffed it, and the fade-through is equivalent to the rest of the car. In addition, the inside of it is the same as the rest of my interior paint. But now I'm getting off-topic..

It could very likely be a dealer pre- delivery repaint on the outside of the hatch. The car might have gotten damaged or scratched in transport or coming off the truck. It happens all the time.

That fisheye pattern indicates that the paint wasn't baked, as it was in the factory.
