Please advise, yes i read al the Faq topics an i read all the search topics...
but people seem to speak about 2 different things. making it not clear for me.

please advise about a freewayfyer WITHOUT RGB's.

if i read the topics some people seem drive with insane final drive ratio's... but i think allthough the are slammed that the run RGB's.

I'm planning to build a all new gearbox/engine setup...the engine is gonne be a 2050cc.
what gearboxes do you all drive with what final drives.??

I'm thinking about a 3,88 rp with 0,93..this is your normal AT ratio.
Is this to tall to haul it up hill or still to small....
and what about a super diff/ hd side plate/ welded gears..
wenn is this nessesary ???

thanks

1915 cc, dual 44s, 42/37.5 heads
3:88, stock first, second and third, .082 fourth.
85 - 90 mph no problem with pulling hills.

GPS Verified?

Dont even have a stereo. Verified by the people Im passing on the Turnpike. 8)

Turnpike is 75, so that means everyone is going 80 to 85, so sounds about right to me  . Feel free to give me a ride in that thing sometime when you feel like cruising 90.

Will do. Next time your down in Tulsa holler at me.

Sounds like a fun ride. What size tires do you have on the rear?

speeds like that never seem to be GPS verified. what did the speedo say? with those little tires, the speedo should be reading well over 100 at 85-90. (pretty much pegged) I know those speeds are possible, because I GPS verified a sustained 75mph in my RGB bus with a 1600.

GPS? Hell I dont even run a tach.
No speedo due to the cable breaking at speed, slamming back and breaking my needle off. Heres a pic of my DC speedo at speed, same tranny other than .089 fourth.

@deadendVW: what engine do you use with your DC.....and do you feel like a good final ratio...or did you think about even a longer or shorter ratio...

BTW nice panel...a 3,88 rp with 0,82 4th will give you 80 miles/h at 3500rpm...so 85/90 is possible....but thas fast in a lowered bus....no need some balls for that, thats for sure.

best cooling is at 2800 rpm....but there is no torque at this rpm....
VW calculated factory cruising speeds at 3400 rpm.... what is wisdom...

how about a .89 4th? 3.88 to 1 uses .93 4th stock. using a .82 bus 4th would maybe make down shifting to 3rd on hills needed?

The Highway patrol radar trailer said 91 MPH.....

1776cc @ 8.6:1c/r
Small split lift/split duration cam w/104 deg. lobe center
stock heads,(ports opened and cleaned up, 3 angle valve job)
40mm Kadrons (manifolds cleaned up and port matched to heads)
Berg header w/custom muffler
--------------
Bus trans WITH reduction boxes
3:88 r&p
stock gearing 1st-3rd
0.82 fourth

205/75-15 tires on bus 15's.

90+MPH no problem......

krusher Tue Nov 18, 2008 9:11 am

My truth is 4.12, .89 195/60/15

60mph at 3000rpm. 30 mpg

110hp 1800 engine. 115 tq 2500-5000

88mph foot to the floor down hill on my gsp.

I just dont believe these other guys, there speeds are either off or there flogging the shit out of there engines.

60-65mph requires little throttle 70+ requires 3/4+ throttle.

Heads temps are 320 at 60-65.

krusher wrote: I would really not like to see your head temps. :? Don't know the head temp, but the oil temp is always 190+/- @ 75MPH. After taking long trips at that speed +/-, I can put my hand on the case and hold it there. Temps @ 90+MPH??? I don't hold that speed for long lengths of time...

is that with small nut or large nut rgbs ? did you just have gears changed in stock trans ? I should try this.

If I were to do it again, I would use a 0.89 fourth instead of the 0.82.... it would close the gap between 3rd & 4th and be better for the hills with the small motor.

I use stock bug gearing in my straight axle - that's a 4.125 final drive and a 0.89 4th gear. With my rear tyres at 195/65/15's my excel programme says I'm 70mph at 3500rpm - maybe a struggle for a smallish engine / not suitble for a stock 1600dp?

But drop in a big engine that has higher peaks for torque / power and you could see 90mph at 4500 - thats plenty of grunt required to do that with a bus though.

The 3.88 R&P with 0.82 fourth is a sort of bus flyer spec (nice too as it closes the ratios slightly) but it puts the final drive ratio in between a stock big nut bus and a stock straight axle bug. And with 205/75/15's (they are big meats!) he's doing the same 4500 rpm's at 90mph. I would imagine there is a gap opening up between 3rd and 4th though.

Start with how you want to drive and work backwards?

miscreantgnomie Tue Nov 18, 2008 10:40 am

Well I want to crusie at 70 mph and not be at like 4500 rpm :p

I have stock size bus wheels and a small nut tranny.

I have a 1915 with dual 40s in it and a vz 25 cam in it.

Im not a motor guy :p

I just want to be able to go 70 mph without taching up my motor so high.

I only cruise at 55 now because motor just tachs to high on small nut.

WorkingClass Tue Nov 18, 2008 10:42 am

thanks you guys,

so a 4,124 with 0,89 is almost the same final ratio as a 3,88 with 0,93..
@krusher.....are you happy with this ratio....not to long/to short....experiense going uphill...

does anyone have an opnion about wenn to you use a welded 3/4 gears with super diff and hd side cover.....rancho advises me to do that.
