Our Police our rolling today with New radar that measure speed/distance between TWO cars and writing "following too close" tickets based on the readout! Sounds good to me since I leave 1 car length per 10 mph!

Good!!! Maybe this will teach all the SUV A-holes that feel the need to drive with there highbeams and fog lights on and be 2' off my bumper to back the hell off!!!

there's a relay that makes the fog lights turn off with the high beams on ;)

but, when you're in a car those damn headlights are shinin' right in your mirror at eye level and the fog lights manage to hit both side view mirrors. i usually just drop it in second and let out the clutch and watch them swerve...then they back off.

how can a radar prove you were following to close?

Seems like a complete waste of time for the police to issue such a ticket.

TallCity Tue Nov 18, 2008 1:16 pm

just think if the cops have time for that maybe they might have time to ticket people for more blatant thinks like...running a red light right in front of them.
Sorry just a rant, i see this happen about every other day. There goes the car through the red light...and there sits the cop on his cell phone. Sad but true.

now for a good rant. i live a block away from 3 different schools. middle, junior and high schools are all centrally located. last month some douche that was high on drugs was going 55 down the street and hit a kid on a bike. everyday i see people fly down that road. (speed limit is 25) but even with that happening i have yet to see a cop run radar...in the 3 years i've lived there i can count on one hand the cops that have run radar on that road...EVEN WITH SCHOOL GOING ON. but when my wifes car gets hit (minor fender bender) 3 cops show up...two sit in there cars and the 3rd does the work. i mean, don't the other two have something better to do? i don't live in a big town...hell, arkansas population is the same of dallas.

and yes, i've written to the police cheif before

sorry, i had to rant

i had a friend who had that problem of people flying down his street that had kids playing around. He had contacted the police several times. He had no luck so he took the matter in his own hands. There was one poticular truck that would drive like crazy on his street so... he found a cinder block that was filled with concrete and put it in a paper bag. About the time the speeding truck came by he put the innocent looking bag in the guys path. Needless to say when the guy hit it, it destroyed his oil pan.

I think the thought of this is funny, but never would i wish this on any one.

there is a rumor in Chico, ca that people do this with there piles of leaves in the street...

Last I checked the leading cause of accidents was tailgating. I'm all for the cops busting the tailgating losers. Whats with the one's that are a few inches off your bumper when they can clearly see there are 4-5 slow pokes ahead of you?

Another trick that works, is take that interior mirror and aim it back at them.

Real simple to do, just make the offending light reflect on the ceiling of your

car and slowly direct it back towards your rear window and I guarantee they

will shut their fog/high beams down in a second once they get a taste of their

own medicine.

WOW !!!

Rants!!

I've always felt that the motoring public, cars and trucks are the largest untapped budget gap filler in existence.

The fines for violations are quite honestly pocket change to the average citizen today. "so what, I got a speeding ticket, I spend more than that for dinner and an evening of entertainment in NYC" IF fines for speeding, tailgating, RIDING THE CENTER LANE and other common offenses were set up high, way high for cars and through the roof for trucks (I'm talking about 10's of $1,000's of dollars per offense for an 18 wheeler) the money brought in by exisitng and already paid staff would be huge.
The beauty of this is that it is a 100% voluntary tax! "Hey stupid, you know the rules, you choose to violate, you also choose to pay". Very similar to tobacco and alcohol taxes, you choose to purchase, you choose to pay the taxes, you don't NEED any of these items.

Would it hurt poor innocent families and truckers? You BETCHA! (thanks Sarah)

The beauty of this in my State (NJ) is that we host millions of out of State vehicles everyday so even when (IF ?) the locals start obeying the laws we can prey on the tourist! (aka the Carolina's and Georgia back in the 60's and 70's)
Difference would be to post the violations, the fines and the need for IMMEDIATE PAYMENT along with the "Welcome to NJ" signs.
Get a credit card payment on the spot or impound the vehicle until the fines are paid, impound fees, storage fees, and towing fees.
If one cannot require immediate payment for I"m sure that violates people's rights, a large "traffic violation bond" to assure that you return for your trial and possible fine payment.

Would I speed if I faced an almost certain $1000 or larger fine? Uh, nope.

I have always been able to detect when there is an escalade near me because #1 It's all I can see it (in all mirrors) #2 It's passing me. they all seem to think they are high and mighty  so I like to teach them a lesson and slow down when we hit the two lane

As good as it feels (I know, I used to do it to them) to irritate IDIOTS, you are actually making the road more dangerous by ramping up the frustration level of this type of person. He/ she will now take unsafe driving measures to get by you or back at you or to make up "lost" time.

Do us all a favor, swallow your pride and just pull over and let her (most often it is a her in those giant SUV's) go impatiently on her way feeling superior to YOU. Be the bigger person here.

Won't bother me none. I own a detector/scrambler, yes it's legal. Not that I drive like an A-hole...

Next time don't "think".

The best way to handle the tailgaters during the day is to casually turn on your lights. They will think that you hit the brakes and slow down in a hurry! That cinder block thing intrigues me too but with my luck I'd be the one going to jail.......

"Following Too Close" is the main causal factor to accidents in the big cities. People do not leave themselves enough distance / time to react to what happens in front of them.
