hi, as far as i know the cars didn't really vary until '61 when we got the australia/italy only 1/2 - 1/2 tail lights.
i haven't had a 58 (CKD) for years but i don't remember any vw stamped bits on it. this leads me think that the kangaroo stamps came on later australian manufactured parts. i have read somewhere that for the later CKD cars there was a specified amount of "australian" content required, hence the glass. (don't quote me on this without double checking).
as an aside though, i have seen some parts with the kangaroo and the same parts that are from the same period without.

Hi,

CKD's were painted where they were assembled.
Australia has many of their own colors.

Has a link to a wonderful listing of them for the various years.

Where the heck is IN2VWS? He is probably the most qualified to answer this thoroughly.

I think, at the very least, the headliner was also different. Or maybe they weren't different until '59... ?

Indeed! John (IN2VWS) will know everything about the differences of Aussie cars.

As far as I'm aware, only the glass, paint and interior trim are unique on '58 CKDs.

There were no Roo's on Aussie VW's in '58. That stuff didn't appear until the 60's.

It will have Aussie glass in the windows and Aussie speedo.

It should have a CKD stamp on the spring plates, and another one behind the dash above the radio slot.

There will also be a number stamped behind the spare well, on the shelf where the brake fluid resevoir is. We didn't get the German body numbers like the Euro built Beetles.
I am still trying to figure out what the letter 'C' represents. Don't know what the letter A represents above this number
