View original topic: Tune-Up Order of Operations

I need to adjust my carb (running to lean), adjust timing, and set the proper idle.

What order should I do this in because I know doing one first will effect the other

Thanks guys

valves
timing
air/fuel
idle

is how i would do it

Then while the engine is warm, change the oil.

So the rpm and carb dont have anything to do with the timing? Just curious, if my carb was completely unadjusted and the idle was at say, 400rpm, would it still statically time correctly?

Yes, carb adjustments don't have anything to do with timing. Timing is a function of valves & distributor.
adjusting the carb will get you the right mixture to burn in the cylinders, the timing is what will govern when the mixture is ignited and how it's expelled from the cylinders.

Cool, ive always wondered this but never remembered to post. Im gonna go tune up the car, i adjusted the valves already so the rest should be a breeze. ill come back if somehting goes wrong

OIL
Valves
DWELL
Timing
Carb

If you're going to do a tune-up, you might as well do EVERYTHING.

bon2198 Tue Nov 18, 2008 11:43 am

make sure that 009 is timed to 28-32 deg BTDC @ 3500 RPM... i'm sure you already knew that though....

I'll suggest:

Spark plugs
Valves
those get done while engine is cold

Air cleaner
Points/DWELL
Timing
temperature not a huge issue with those

Engine needs to be at operating temperature for carb to be adjusted

Oil change: at least warm up the engine a bit before draining.

lol.

might as well change the oil after doing the carb adjustment.

i have found this website to be useful.

http://www.vw-resource.com/tune-up.html

the only thing they do not cover is to change the oil. of course, it is not in the order listed above but I think it does a good job breaking down some common questions about each topic.

I did everything but the car wont idle without gas until its been driven for about 5 mins any suggestions

Wwildman Fri Nov 21, 2008 3:58 am

Did you check your exhaust crossover if it is clogged when the car is cold the gas will not vaporize in the intake it will just puddle

fmartin_gila Fri Nov 21, 2008 7:08 am

When I had mine off, I found the exhaust crossover to heat the intake was totally clogged up. I wound up using some 12 inch long drill bits to work through it, cause it was so solid. Sure made a world of difference in the way it runs.

If I blow air into the left pre-heat tube should air come out the right pre-heat tube? Sorry for the stupid question, but I am not that familiar with the VW engine. I am having idle problems and loosened mine today blew in one and nothing came out the other. Thanks for your help.

Yes, you need to have exhaust flow through the crossover tube to be effective. On my Single Port manifold, I had to drill holes at the appropriate places in the bends so I could run a 12 inch drill bit through to get clear, but mine were totally solid all the way from about one inch in from each end and around the bends. The biggest drill I used was 1/4 inch and just wallered it around in there and got a hole all the way through working from both ends. Then a liberal dose of carb cleaner finished softening up so I could blow it all out with an air nozzle. After I got it clear, I gas welded the holes I had made so it wouldn't leak exhaust into the engine compartment. The 12 inch drill bits are available from ACE.

Where is this located? Before I tuned it up, it was idling fine. Someone suggested that I need to drive around for about 15 or 20 mins before adusting the carb. I only drove for about 5 minutes before I adjusted

Fred,
Thanks for the reply and the information. A rebuild of the carb appears to have fixed my problem. I plan on dropping the engine to repair the oil cooler/seal leak, install the Eurosport exhaust, and detail the engine a bit. I will be taking a long look at the crossover...:)
again, Thanks!
