What all is exchangeable between these two motors? I have 3 boxes of parts I just started to look through and found the code on the block is EA. So when buying new/used parts what parts are for the 1.7 only and which can be used on either?
I plan on getting new pistons/cylinders, crank and rods look ok but I'll have a closer look at em later. Heads don't appear to have any cracks, but will have them checked further at the machine shop, etc.....
Thanks guys. |

Depending on which heads you choose to use will be the only determining factor, 1.8's heads will not work on 1.7 P&C's, and the 1.7 head would have to have the registers opened to fit the 1.8 P&C's. Make sure the rods you use all have the same size "nub" on the pin end, long & short, don't mix.
Always replace the cam & lifters, get the case checked, crank polished or turned and the rods sized, bushed and balanced. |

Sorry for being vw ignorant, but can you tell me how to identify the heads I have.
So basically your saying that the blocks are the same otherwise, it's all dependent on the heads? That makes things a lot easier. :) |

| Heads, barrels and pistons are different, measure the diameter of the cylinder barrel sealing surface in the head. It's good to check that all the valves are matched sizes between pairs of heads too. |

Barrels = Cylinders?
I'll definitely dis-assemble the heads down and check valves and make sure they are all equal and check the seat surfaces.
So are the crank and rods the same or is the stroke different between the 2 or is it the bore that makes up the extra displacement? |

90mm = 1.7
93mm = 1.8
Yes, Barrels are Cylinders
Crank & Rods basically the same, same stroke, same bearings. Main bearings the same, all T4 based cases interchangeable. Although the valves are important, it is seats that will leave you stranded. |
