ive just gotten a 55 beetle and the shifter just started to have a lot of slack doesnt seem to be definetly shift cant get it into reverse i took the top off and can manually move the rod with my finger without much resistance any suggestions this is my first beetle and i dont have any experience with them thanks rich

put the shifter back if and finger tight the 2 13mm bolts. Try and get the car into reverse gear. then give it a little wiggle, say a prayer, and tighten the bolts.

Now sit in the seat and give it a whirl through the gears with the clutch in.

Thats how I've set all of my cars shifters.

what is the shaft attached to in the read it feel as if it not doing anything i moved it with my finger and it doesnt seem to be doing anythin in the transmission thanks

Your shift coupler under the rear seat is most likely toast.

is that asseible fro top or bottomthanks thats what it feels like like its notdoing anything. its a ball and socket connection in gear shiftgt lever there is no gromet metal ballto metal socket i assume thats correct and the plate that goes under shifter has a lip on right hand side the front end of the lip is raised is that correct or should it be straight all the way thanks rich

rich, access is under the rear seat. There should be a panel with 2 slotted screws you have to remove.

thanks found trouble cokuple let loose any suggestions on where to find a new one also is there supposed to be a vent on fuel tank mine has two holes in fillerneck opposite each other with bolts and fiber washers thanks rich

The vent for your tank is actually part of the fuel cap. I don't know what those two holes are for, maybe an aftermarket fuel level sender?
