View original topic: stumbling on acceleration

I had some trouble accelerating last night. The valves were good and it idled perfectly but if I just hit the gas it would choke a little like it was missing on a cylinder or two and then go. It also kept dying when I would come to a stop light. I decided to change the timing a little and I turned the distributor counter-clockwise just a little bit. This bump up the idle a little but I turned it back down to normal on the carb. It idles fine now, it doesn't die when I cruise to a stop light and I have decent throttle response. Is this an alright fix? Or am I just sweeping over other issues? I have a 009, pertronix and H30/31 on a sp 1600 long block.

(edit) Valves are adjusted perfectly, new plugs, cap and rotor. (edit)

Have you considered timing it correctly?

If you messed with the 30/31 carb, you should adjust it according to the instructions.
First get the 009 timed corrctly about 7 degrees at idle and them adjust the carb. I run the same combination in my 1600 DP motor and when it's adjusted properly, there are no hesitation or flat spots.

It was timed correctly but it wasn't working how it should. I thought 7 degrees was just a general starting point and you need to adjust by hand from there?

Your 009 distributor needs to be set when all of the advance it has is "in" to ensure that it does not have "too much" and is causing a pre-ignition condition.

I would say that yours doesn't even have the 21º of total advance in it anymore.

You would be well served to drive over to aircooled.net over in Murray and pick up a SVDA that would work with your 30/31.

I totally agree with you on the svda. I just have to save up all that cash.

are there any videos on timing a 009 dizzy? i have the 34pict3/009 combo right now until i get it running then i'll replace it with an svda but i would like to get my timing done correctly first.

all this talk about advance, 2000rpms and what not :x

I agree, that would be a great help.

Really nothing magical about it. Hook up the timing light, loosen the distributor bolt and wind up the engine speed until it quits advancing.

Make that point of max advancement to be about 28º BTDC. Let it loaf back to idle and see where you are but don't change it.

Shut it off and tighten the bolt. Start it up again and adjust the idle speed to about 850 RPMs and then take it for a ride and see how it does.

You are finished.

Some combo's may like more around 30 total... but agreed it is that simple.

However simple is not so simple for those with out a degree wheel and who are confused or do not know what the stock marks on the *pulley on their engine mean ( never assume you have the correct on for "your year car".

You have to know what mark(s) your pulley has, what is TDC and be able to measure out and mark were 28-32 would be.

There is some benificial info in general in the sticky up top ^^^^

may pulley only has marks in white out for tdc and 180.
guess i'll just get a timing gun then i'll figure it out from there.

for cranking the engine do you actually start the car? or do you just spin the rotor by hand/tool?

Usually cranking the engine over implies using the starter motor. However, if you have the plug leads connected the motor will start! Sometimes people will say "crank it over" just implying turn it with a wrench like you suspect.

What is the context in which you are being told to crank the engine over?

The engine has to be running with the timing light connected....
