On my 73 super, why are the Y tubes under the back seat perforated? I took the drivers side Y tube out to put a fan in, and saw that it has uniform holes all through it. Must be a reason???????

they were perforated then wrapped in insulation... this was done to help muffle engine noise that came through the exchangers.

Vw had them made that way back in the 70's it saved them on manufacturing cost as they insullated them in the car.

Interesting. I assumed the insulation was to keep the heat in, but sound deadening makes sense. Thanks

if you've ever examined a glasspack muffler or even the factory "pea shooters" on a vw, it's the same concept

Interesting that you asked this question. I was wondering the same thing, and the reason I knew about it, was I just installed a GM blower motor in that space, and ducted it into the left side. Works good, but the fan noise is a little annoying. Sounds like a vacuum cleaner running!
