Hello, I am sitting here with a hole lotta engine tin for my 1.7 that needs to be painted. My question, is what type of paint should i use? High temp, or will regular paint do? Also should i stay with black, or can i use another colour without attracting too much heat?

Just to be nice, start with a search of: engine AND tin AND paint that will get you started,,, it's been discussed into the dirt, and there's some fine examples of nice looking engine compartments that will come up in that search as well. After that, it's only ART, and you'll have learned how to SEARCH and READ.

Im starting with a high temp rustoleum. Good to 1200 degrees. Because it only comes in flat black, I will be re-spraying everything in a high temp engine semi gloss black paint. The semi gloss was not recommended for bare medal, so I primed it with the rustoleum high temp paint. Looking good so far. only about 25 more pieces to go.

thanks for all the info guys

I've never had an issue with good old Tremclad/Rustoleum gloss black, none of the tin gets hot enough to bother it and if it does you have bigger troubles than cooked paint.

BTW, try the search feature, it really does make things go alot smoother here and may actually help you.

Also might want to look into powder coating if the budget allows.

High temp paint is entirely unnecessary. Color is entirely up to you.

Maybe I should have left off the caps..

I used a rustoleum silver hammered finish on the outside, black high temp on the inside, sierra yellow highlights,

I have used spray Rustoleum everytime, and never had an issue. Good luck.

The high temp paint definitely is not necessary, but I like it. Peace of mind man....

vdub, nice rescue on the other board. Good cars, good people.

Sand or media blasting of the tinwork is also helpful in getting a good durable paint job on there.

we bought a $89 glass bead box at Harbor Freight and blasted using my air compressor. Then painted with VHT high temp engine paint. Very sturdy. If you are going show then powder coat. We used paint because it is so much less costly. On the headers etc use the VHT header ceramic paint.

I'm thinking of going white with the tin... Anybody know a way to shine up an engine case?

You would sooner have someone speedbag your nutsack than paint your tin white. It'll look great, until the first time you start the engine. Don't go with white.

we cleaned the grease off the shroud and then took it to the stripping company who blasted it with walnut shells or something like that. Then painted it VHT Engine Aluminum.

Try having your tin painted white.
