I'm looking to replace the tires on my 56 with a set of Firestone bias plies. I'm having a hard time trying to decide whether I want 1" whitewall, wide whites, or black wall. Opions?

I've got a set of US Royal 2.25" wide whites on my Zwitter. 15 years ago I thought it looked terriffic with the wide whites and all kinds of accessories. In my old age I've started thinking a simple unadultrated beetle is pretty nice looking too. I've de-accessorized my car somewhat and if I ever have to do any body work on the rear fender I'll pull off the tall rear guards. If that happens I'd loose the wide whites too.
I don't like narrow white walls on a 50's car, they dont look like they belong. It's either wide or nothing.
Your car looks fantastic in all it's simple non accessorized splendor. I think black firestones would look great, they have a nice old looking ribbing at the top of the sidewall. |

That's kind of the way I'm leaning as well. My 64 vert runs wide whites but it also has a lot more toys.

I vote(d) for the wide whites.
I think the lighter metallic ovals look great in wide whites. When I finished my '57 I had 2 sets of wheels done, blackwall radials and wide white Firestone BP's. I ran the radials for a bit, then put the wide whites on for a show.
That was 9 years ago, and they have never been off since....

Hello-
I vote for wide whites.
If you have the money, I would suggest purchasing a set of Vredesteins and having them converted to whitewalls. It won't be cheap, but you'll get the best of both worlds.

I voted wide white as I would really like them on mine! but it was less likely to have been correct on my Swede, so I have stuck to Made in Sweden black Firestones :(

Wow! The first light beige car I have seen posted on here that still has 'orange/red' wheels! :D

Have you seen the feature on the German light beige car pictured?

Just say NO to painting blackwalls white!
Vredesteins were never fitted new in Europe. Were they in US? I always thought they were a modern tyre brand now making some old style sizes for the classic market? I once put some on our daily hack bmw estate as a cheap alternative. |

Looks like I was beat to the punch.
Here is my car way back when. Wish it was still like this.
I would not have afforded it :(

| Voted wide whites as the strato silver is to me the most luxurious colour available on a beetle of this era. So let's push it and put accessories ;) |
