I found this old engin in my neighbors barn, and being a little bit intelligent with VW's I know it is a 1200, but would like to know more details about it. (Specs, Value, ETC.) Anyway the engine vin (below the generator) is 3525675.

Thanks in Advance!

Engine specifications can be found in the 1960 manual here:

It is impossible to determine a value based on the information given.

Sounds like you have an engine that was remanfactured by Vege-Motoren, distributed in the USA by ATK. Their engines are usually good. Is it a new tag riveted to the block as shown in this thread?:

If so, that's an ATK/Vege engine. B-codes, orginally were 1600, single port.

By the way, speaking of charts, I like my engine data chart better....

the engine vin on my 63 bug (production date 10/62) are 0716618 any ideas on this number? they almost look hand died. it has a stale air shroud. also appears the block was painted blue.... dont know if PO did this or not. had air at one time (comp gone but blower unit in cabin still there with all lines leading to engine...)

There shouldn't be a VW number that starts with a 0 like that. The old 36HP engine would have ben 1-0716618 in Jan 1954, and the 1966/newer engine all have a letter before any zero. So I think yours might be someone's custom numbering. Is it a 1200/40HP styel engine?

thanks just to verify here is a general pic of my engine

and a pic on the Engine VIN

yes yes i know previous PO installed the muffler

Yeah, looks like an old 1200/40HP. Cant see the ends of the manifold to confirm they are the 1200 style but they look like it.

Not sure what the engine number means though. Those do look like factory stampings. I have seen engines with very faint letter stampings before though, like this early F(1300) block engine:

what kind of pulley is that ?

glutamodo Wed Dec 17, 2008 9:36 pm

Looks like some kind of A/C pulley perhaps.

judson superchargers used a similair pulley

Ah, yes that's a good guess too.
