View original topic: Doghouse Cooler and Single Releif Case

Does anyone know if running a doghouse oil cooler on a single relief case, thermostat and flaps installed will become a problem? That is the configuration of my son's new '67. I am thinking the doghouse came at the same time or after the dual relief case. I'm not sure one has anything to do with the other but am concerned that since there is always air moving over the oil cooler, especially at a COLD (below freezing) start up and flaps closed or only partially opened during the winter the oil pressure may be too high. Is that true and is that why they went to a dual relief?

I've built a few engines with a single relief case and used a dog house shroud, flaps and offset cooler. None ever had any problems.

You'll need to get the captive nut for the top case bolt on the 3/4 side.

I put a late doghouse setup on my 40HP and it worked fine. You need to use the whole assembly, and the fan that goes with it.

I didn't use the pressed nut above, and so getting it tight/loose was sometimes a two-man job.

Yeah Same here. The bolt hole in a single relief case isn't big enough for you to just tap the nut insert into it.

Thanks for the replies!

As I said, the mod was completed by the PO. Now however you've got me courious. What's the deal with the captive nut? Why? What does it do for you? Not sure if the PO did it or not but I plan to use a doghouse on my '68 (whenever I get to it) so a little better understanding would be usefule.

The purpose of that captive nut is because the offset cooler and shrouding make it very difficult to get in there and put a nut on that engine bolt. Unless you have arms/hands like PlasticMan or something.

I tried a doghouse setup in my 40HP for a while last year, and managed to deal with that nut by myself. It's a pain but it's doable.
