Just bought a 1960 vert, its been sitting for awhile. the trans is suppose to have been rebuilt. when I installed the shiffter I can get into 2nd, 3rd, and 4th but when I try for first it's like hitting a brick wall it's just not going to go
I don't believe this year has a shift bushing? Any thoughts?

Got oil in the gearbox?
Is it a split case or a later full synchro?
Adjusted the shifter?

Is the engine running? Sometimes things are just in the right place that the gears won't mesh. Try jacking the rear wheels off the ground, put it into what ever gear you can get and turn one of the rear wheels. Then try again.

I'll Check the gearbox oil, Don't think there's any in it. I've messed with the shifter.shifting seems to be working more on the right side of center for 2nd, 3rd, & 4th than being in the center. It has the 60' front trans mount but it's not a split case. the only number I can see on it is 113 301.103 with a # 19 above center of that # I have the body off of it right now so I think it's a good thing to solve this right now.

drscope the engine is not in the car, I bought it that way I had to remove the body because there was no pan gasket installed. or shift rod and the shifter.
so I thought I would address this before reinstalling the body.

Update- I checked the gearbox oil,BONE DRY, I topped it off w/90 weight
pushed the pan around the back yard for a bit in gear. Jacked up the right rear tire put it in gear and turned the wheel. What I noticed is that when I try to go thru all the gears is that 1st thru 4th the rear main shaft turns clockwise and when I put in reverse the shaft turns counter clockwise so it seem like I have all the gears? I checked out the trans again and found another # it has 113 301.103 on the trans. and 211. 301. 211E on the nosecone any input from the MASTERS on this would be great. The shifter still seems like it's still doing it's thing all on the right side of center.
THANKS

This is good. The Bus nose cone is needed when installing a synchro gearbox in a 60 or older.

To set the shifter, get it in 1st or 2nd. Then slide the shifter around until it is perfectly square to the world when viewed from the center of the back seat.

Hey Bruce
I'm Brain dead (long day) so your saying I have a syncro trans. with a bus nosecone right? I'll try to dial in the shifter a little more in the morning. I can't thank you guys enough for your input. this car is pretty much all apart so every nut and bolt will have to be checked before it's back on the road again but at least the the car is straight. I have several more questions on this beetle and I'm new to samba so I guess I will have to start a new Subject question when it's time.
