View original topic: Question about replacement paper element air cleaner on 74

Hi!

I have been checking out these forums for a while, but this is my first post.

I have a 74' Standard Beetle which I have been using as an around-town daily driver for about 4 years, and I just got this replacement air cleaner from CIP1 (complete air cleaner assembly without warm air bypass):

It looks to be manufactured by VW of Mexico.

I wanted to replace a really bad after-market foam air cleaner (one of those round silver things)...

My question is this: there are two similarly sized hose connectors on the right bottom side of the unit (just below where the 'horn' attaches). I assume that one of these is for attaching a hose between the attachment near the oil filler cap, but I am not sure what the other is for. Which of the two should I attach the hose to (assuming that I should at all) and should I leave the other attachment port alone or plug it? Also, what size hose should I get (if needed)?

I know this is a complete newbie question, but I would appreciate an answer. Sorry if this is answered elsewhere...

Thanks!

welcome to theSamba!

I think one connection is for the crankcase breather by the oil cap, and one for the gas tank ventilation/evaporative emissions connection. I'd use whichever one lines up best to hook up to your crankcase breather and cap off the other one. (unless you want to ressurect your tank evaporative system, depending on what previous owner's have done to it )

They had two different size fittings on that crank breather over the years, so it's hard to tell you which size hose you'd need. VW had a shaped connection hose that went from the breather to the air filter, CIP sells it, but as to if it'll work with the parts you have I can't say.

You have 2 hoses running to the charcoal evap canister. One runs from the fan shroud, #15, and the other comes from the rearward airbox port ( front is front, see hose #16 ), and the front airbox port was used for the crankcase vent from the oil filler. This is the preformed vent pipe that Andy is referring to.

When I removed my evap canister, I plugged the rearward airbox port. You can find vac plugs in various sizes at your local autoparts stores.

Also, does your new air cleaner have the oil breather de-mister coil in the breather port? This is a shot of the front port on the bottom of the air cleaner.

That'd be the front one (front of car).

part of a kitchen dishwashing metal scrubber thing works well if the aircleaner is missing the baffle
