I found some threads about Talbot Horizon (bold on) calipers on TheSamba, but while some talk about ATE that only fits, I found actually two kinds that suppose to fit on the "Gallery".
Now I finally found where I can buy Talbot calipers, but there a three kinds, that look like as if the could all fit. The picture of the caliper of both Talbot and Beetle is from the Gallery and looks most like the Lucas up to 1981.
But then I found a picture of a Talbot caliper, mounted on a Beetle (black/white), that looks like the BDX/Bosch up to 1981.
The third caliper is Lucas after 1981 and that also seems like it will fit.
Does anybody actually drives with Talbot calipers and can tell me more about these three kinds before I order them?
Thanks in advance!

| why don´t you just go with replacement new Varga calipers instead? They are cheap enough, and available in Europe. |

Aren't they just stock calipers?
I allready have stock calipers. I want larger, bold on and for a reasonable price. The Talbot ones seems great.... |

| OK then, I thought you are looking for some low cost solution and wasn´t aware the Talbot calipers are larger. I´m fine with my stock discs on the front and Type 3 drums in the rear. |

I'm also gonna convert soon to type 3 drums in the rear. What is your experience of those rear brakes? Do you notice a (big) difference?
Concerning the front brakes; the longer you have your car, the more you want to improve.
When I bought the car 5 years ago, I just needed a cheap classic car and payed 700 euro for it (VW 1300 1974). I told myself to keep the costs low, but little by little I improved/restored more and more and now I'm up to 11,000 euros. :D |

| I think you want the ATE 81-85 calipers, that's what I was told long ago |

| I´m very satisfied. My combo provides a very balanced handling and braking. If you want to improve front brakes just have your stock discs drilled, use better pads and braided hoses. I did not want to use worn old parts, restore them and clean them etc., so I build my chassis from new or NOS parts. |

Yeah, braided hoses are a good option. I remember we used that with Classic Mini's when we converted them to ventilated MG Metro Turbo discs. The feel on the brake pedal was much harder and direct.
Concerning brake pads, I like the Green Stuff from EBC. I finally figured out the part number for stock Beetle calipers, but I haven't found a company that want to ship to Sweden....
But these Talbot calipers, they are much larger and obviously still available. They cost appr. 90 euros each in Holland. Still wondering which of the 3 above fit and work best......
Ofcourse you can convert to Porsche 944 brakes, but then you'll be stuck with Porsche wheels (unless you like to do a big job in converting the hub/flange), but I love stock steel rims. Especially on pre '66 Beetles; the wide 5, and then widened to like 6.5 inch (Herbie style), so cool..... ! |

What a great webbsite, thanks!!!
It still doesn't say much about the type of Talbot calipers that can be used, but it seems like he used the BDX/Bosch style. |
