| I posted this once before but had only 1 reply and that wasn't the help I needed. The output shaft in my 66 sits off the right slightly. The PO took the trans apart to get it unstuck from 3rd and when I looked at the trans closer I noticed it. It sits off towards 1 to 2 O'clock slightly. Is this a problem? I would ask my local shops but they will all want to rebuild it or sell me a rebuilt one and that is fine if it is needed. They are pretty slow and need the work but I do not have the $ right now. |

The input shaft does not have a support on the end closest to the engine/flywheel. It is held at the back with a stud and coupler. Depending on how tight the stud and shaft were screwed in before the coupler and clip was re-attached, this will affect the amount of slop the shaft will exhibit.
Here's a picture
There's nothing to worry about though. As long as the pilot bearing in the gland nut is fine, the shaft will be held and will ride in there when re-assembled. What's wrong with your transmission now? |

| I think I called it by the wrong name. With the engine out and the trans installed it's the shaft that sticks out the back of the Bug. So I guess that would be the input shaft.....because that is what hooks to the engine and transfers the power. I do not what is wrong with it nothing maybe but the shaft makes me nervous. |

| Grab the shaft, does it wiggle around ? It should as it isn't supported by anything @ the rear when the engine is out. If the seal is worn out it could sit at any kind of funny angle. I'd recommend replacing the seal at least. If you can grab the shaft and pull it OUT of the car then there is a problem and it will need to be screwed back in place. |
