View original topic: Anybody recognize this radio?

This Blaupunkt radio is in my 65 bug. I have never seen another pic of one quite like it, and was wondering what model it is? There was only the remains of a sticker on the side of it, (all I could make out was "UNKT GMBH"). It is odd in that the speaker, which has a large blue metallic shiny BLAUPUNKT sticker on the back as well, is apparently part of the radio, there are no spade connectors or screw ins, just a big brown wire from speaker to the radio? (PS, PO did the ugly red knobs job, I've got some resto work to do...)

The sticker probably is just missing the BLAUP"UNKT GMBH". Gmbh is just a German acronym for a limited liability corporation - like our "LLC." or "Co."

You need to speak to Rick Oakley over here in the uk, what he doesnt know about blaupunkts isnt worth knowing! As an aside, I have seen that type quite a few times, its quite cool, but the red paint definitely needs to be removed!

That's an Essen (US) model. Made 1965-66.

You mean this 65/66 :

http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/blaupunkt_essen_3.html

or this one 66/67?

http://www.radiomuseum.org/r/blaupunkt_essen_2.html

As web.telia.com the pic that belongs to a 1965 Essen is pretty different:

Thanks for the replies, nice to know its from 65, so probably original to the car :)
Unfortunately, it doesnt work right now. When I turn ignition on, the radio puts out static, but the radio does not light up (I dont know if its supposed to?), and turning the dials does nothing, ON OFF buttons dont do anything either... It looks nice sitting there though.

The US version was different to the European version that is refered to in those links.

The face should light up. You need to track down a 7v 100mA bulb.

Have you got a good antenna connected?

I got the same one, just a little dirty. I bet it has a bad tube. Luckly my dad builds gutair amps and has thousands of tubes.

So is it a fair bet that my buttons have been pulled off, and then put back on wrong?

I would think my knobs are true to this radio. I pulled this radio out of a 61 Ghia, so the trim plate does not fit quite right. But when you are sitting in it, you can't tell. If you can clean the paint off your knobs, I'd keep them. They kinda match the other knobs. I would also think a t.v. repair shop would have the tubes you would need. Alot of them are the same. I'm not looking in my radio now, but some have what is called a vibrator. It looks like a big tube, but is all metal. They often go bad over time.
Good luck!

Water Guy- your buttons are in the correct order.

These models don't have a vibrator, they were only used on Blaupunkts upto 1958.
