My 76 Super Beetle Convertible steering wheel has a lot of play in it. Firstly you can pull the steering wheel out and back about 1/4". Secondly when you got over pot holes or rough road the steering wheel clunks quite a bit. I'm aware of the fact that this model has the rack and pinion set up, but I was wondering if there are bushings around the steering wheel shaft that can be causing this or is it down in the rack and pinion assembly. It is very annoying! Thirdly I have seen complete urethane bushing sets. Would these be of any help?

Check all the fastening points to make sure things aren't coming apart on you first. I would stop driving the car until this is figured out. Does the wheel clunk when you move it right to left and back? Could be worn bushings and other steering parts (tie rod ends, ball joints etc.) I rebuilt the front end of my '73 Super including the bushings you have and it is great now. I had a clunky wheel as well but it was the worn steering box.
